I guess the reason it doesn't bother me is because we definitely settled on the name, so it's not like they're using potential choices. And there isn't anything cultural involved. We call him by the name we're giving him, so if my best friend or one of our parents asks "How's little Derek?" it doesn't really irk me at all. Jewish babies don't really have names until after they are born and have a naming ceremony (we are way superstitious and don't want to get excited/pick a name until after baby is born and healthy).
