We tried a 620 bedtime last night. He was up at 7 crying. Then slept til 1 am. Then was up at 345. Then was up for the day at 5. I tried letting him fuss it out to go back to sleepy but at 6 I had to get him from his crib. He has been swinging in the dark of my room for 20 minutes and I'm praying he is going to fall asleep as I'm delirious. So an early bedtime has now twice backfired for us.

@caffeinated: 11?! that's insane! The latest for us I think was about 9 pm, and that was bad! We ended up switching to a 8:30-8:30 schedule for a while.

@Baby Boy Mom: It was brutal over the summer because it didn't get dark until 11pm. I had garbage bags, black out blinds, the whole bit!

@erwoo: She had three naps today, with the last nap ending at 4:30. I put her down at 7pm but she was not tired, rolling around for 45 minutes...and that's when the crying started! She finally fell asleep at 8:15. I guess i'm going to keep playing around with bedtimes. :(

For us, yes, too early of a bedtime definitely backfires! Of course too late of a bedtime and he's overtired and wakes up from that. You already got a lot of good advice, so I was just going to add one thing. In our case I discovered that it needs to be at least sunset for LO to go to sleep; if there's still any afternoon light he will treat the early bedtime as a nap (=bad).

@caffeinated: Yeah, change sucks! My youngest is also 6 months as well and he usually naps 2x a day now but sometimes still 3x a day depending on when he woke up in the morning and what time and how long he napped for for his first and second nap. The latest I will nap him is around 5pm and I do try to wake him by 7pm so he'll still be able to make his 9:30pm bed time. I just go with it since I stay home and hope for the best! He only had two naps today (1 hour at 11am and almost 3 hours at 3pm) and he didn't go to sleep until 9:30pm. Yeah, really late with a 3.5 hour awake time (he usually has a 2 hour max limit) but he hung in there, rubbing eyes and all. We have late wake up times though; but sometimes he'll wake up the same time his big brother wakes up which is around 7:30-8am. Or his big brother wakes him up by talking so loud in the hallway like he did this morning. This was around 9am.

Our schedule is all over the place. I'm not very consistent but I do go with the flow and somehow it works. My youngest is also pretty chill which I think helps.

Don't forget that 6 months is a big milestone for our LOs! Teething seems big (although not for us yet) and growth spurt, sitting up, etc. Hopefully it's only temporary and that she'll go back to sleeping better again. Keeping my fingers crossed that's the case for you! Hang in there!

@caffeinated: He did sleep straight through after that....I haven't put him to bed that early since. Instead I usually get him a 30 minute nap from 4:30 to 5 or 5 to 5:30 and then he goes to bed at 7. I'm hoping one of these days he starts taking normal length naps and then maybe he won't need that catnap.

@Mrs. Bee: It's funny because lately i've noticed that her naps have been getting shorter by 30 minutes. Sigh, why is it that once you think you have things figured out, they have to change things on you? :P

@Rubies: She used to wake up once for a feeding, and would go back to sleep without a peep. Now she'll cry for an hour and sometimes wake up 1-2 hours later. I'm dying this week and it's only Wednesday!

@winniebee: OMG, that is exactly what happened last night!! She woke up crying every 45 minutes and then cried straight from 9-10. Does he at least sleep straight from 10 onwards? Mine ended up waking up at 3:30, 5:50 and then at 7:20. I guess i have to look on the bright side and be happy that she naps.

I don't have advice, but I do have to say that if I put my son to bed later he usually wakes earlier. Yesterday, we had a similar problem where he woke from his last nap at 3:30 -- his usual bedtime is 7, 7:30 and his max awake time is 2 hours. I went for a jog with him at 5 but he fell asleep at 5:30 and slept til 6. Which resulted in an 8 p.m. bedtime. I once put him to bed early at 6:30 and he woke crying every 45 minutes until 10 and demanded to be fed at 10. I'd like to get him on a set nap schedule, but he only naps for 30 minutes at a time, maybe 45 minutes. It's exhausting.

@caffeinated: How many times does she wake up in the night? When LO was 6 months old, LO was waking up 1-2 times a night to nurse, which I did. My desire to sleep-train was to get her to have long stretches of sleep and to fall back asleep with ease. She didn't start totally sleeping through the night (12+ hours with no wakeups) until she was 10 months old.

@caffeinated: it is really hard for a lot of babies to nap that late. at 6 months, 2 hours is a good awake interval, so maybe she is dealing with that shift from being awake 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

dropping that third nap might mean that her 2 other naps might get longer as well!

@Rubies: i completely forgot about my "bible". i must refer to it today. the whiny parent in me doesn't want to put her to bed early because i don't want to wake up at 6am, possibly 5am!

@Mrs. Bee: she is 6 months old. she used to have an early bedtime of 6:30pm, but she would wake up at 2am, which would just kill me. she does well with an 8pm bedtime as long as she gets in that third nap, but it looks like she's fighting it these days...i wonder if this is the ugly transition period i have to go through?

@Sammyfab: LO will fight sleep if she's not tired enough. i recently learned the hard way that LO's awake time has increased from 90 to 120 minutes! :(

I agree with @Rubies and @Mrs. Bee. Starting at 4 months old, my LO would downright refuse to take a nap if I tried to put him down after 4pm. So if his last nap ended at 3-ish I would put him to bed at 5:30 at the earliest. Similar to @Rubies, my LO regularly goes to bed before 6:30 and he clocks way more sleep the earlier we put him down. In fact, oftentimes when he goes to bed at 5:30 he sleeps 12+ hours straight!

Fighting sleep is rarely an issue of under tiredness unless your LO takes whopper naps or you're using super short wake times.

how old is your lo again?

when charlie wouldn't go down for a nap, i'd rush through the bedtime routine to get him down asap for an early bedtime to prevent too much overtiredness.

your first two naps are at great times. i would suggest a super early bedtime of 5:30-6 instead of the third nap? when i used to put charlie down that early, he would sleep 12 hours. olive goes down at 6:30 every night, and i usually wake her up at 7:30 (she still wakes up in the middle of the night though).

maybe with an earlier bedtime, your lo might sleep longer at night? i know it's counterintuitive, but it really works for a lot of parents.

@caffeinated: "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" says that the last nap should be before 3pm. Your LO's first two naps sound spot on. Perhaps try a super early bedtime? It might sound totally nuts, but my LO wakes up from her afternoon nap at around 2-2:30pm and her bedtime is 5:30-6pm every. single. day. When I tell people this, their jaws drop. But she has to wake up every morning at 5:30am so I HAVE to get her down early.

@Rubies: Her naps have been all over the place lately, as it depends on when she wakes up. Yesterday her first nap was 9pm, second was 1pm. I find that if she goes down for her third nap before 4:15, she won't fight it.

@autumnlove: Your LO is too cute! I have a feeling that going to bed an entire hour earlier may have been too much of a change for her.

I'm sorry! Maybe it was too early?
My LO is usually a poor napper...maybe one or two 20-30 min naps during the day. She wasn't feeling well when I picked her up from daycare and she napped for 3 hours when we got home. Then she played for a bit and then we put her down for bedtime at 8:30. She woke up at 12:30 this morning when she usually sleeps through the night...ahh! She is playing with her toys and crawling around while I'm on the couch!

Today, LO's last nap ended at 3pm. I tried putting her down for her last nap at 5pm but she was rolling around the crib, then ended up crying. It didn't appear that she was going to nap so i took her out, fed her dinner and then went about our nighttime routine. I normally put her down between 7:45 and 8pm, but tonight i put her down at 6:45pm, the earliest i ever put her to sleep.

She woke up 45 minutes later crying but put her back to sleep fairly quickly. Then she woke up again 45 minutes later and hasn't been able to stop crying!!!! Should i not have put her to bed too early? I'm at my wits end with her poor sleeping habits these days. I give up!
