My mum used to only give us a finite amount of paper for drawing and did not tell us where the rest was. That way we had to make do with the paper we had so we were much more careful with how we used it. She would also tell us to continue drawing on the same sheet if we only drew a couple of lines on it, or at least to flip it over and draw on the other side.

@mrs. bird: Yah exactly, it's the waste of resources that bothers me!

We don't really have any scrap paper. Maybe we'll spend some time talking with the kids about trees and how they get turned into paper, etc. Thanks for the ideas!!

that makes me insane, not because of the cost, but because of the waste of resources involved. my nanny LO's have been known to scold others for wasting paper because 'they have to cut down trees to make paper and trees clean the air for us & give animals a place to live', they make me very proud :D sounds like scrap paper or old drawings could make great paper toys for their dolls. we keep a box of scraps and old papers to reuse for projects.

This wouldn't bother me at all. Sounds creative to me! And a whole lot cheaper than new toys! Maybe you can save newspapers or magazines for them to tear pages out of, or used paper that you don't need and would throw away anyway for this purpose instead of using new paper. Or buy notebook paper...it's a whole lot less expensive than printer paper. :)

Yes!! Sometimes LO will paint a few lines and will be done with the paper. I try to at least reuse the other side. I can just hear my mom yapping in my ear about how scarce paper was in her day. :silly:

Sometimes our kids will crumple up a bunch of new paper, and say that they are toys for their babies. They'll put them in a bag and play with the "toys" for a while. Each sheet is only a few cents, but it bothers me. It's just so wasteful!

That said, say that they crumple up 5 sheets... that's not even 20 cents. And if they painted instead, they definitely use up more than that in paint/paper. If it keeps them occupied and happy for the same amount of time, it shouldn't bother me... right? But, it does! Didn't realize that I have an inner budgeter that can't stop thinking in terms of cost/benefit.

See also: kids drawing one or two lines on a sheet of paper, and then getting a new sheet.
