No. I don't begrudge teachers (a.k.a. my mom and sister) their happy snow day posts. It's not like they're actually getting a lot of time off the job with all of the work they do outside of the school, and I think many parts of their job do suck!

It's like being a SAHM mom to a dozen or more kids (at least a few of whom probably have developmental/behavioral issues), with the added joys of bureaucracy and grading papers. Ugh. I'd want snow days too...

It doesn't bother me persay, but I would like to say that I think you are a wonderful teacher for being bothered by this. I agree that social media is often more harmful to the greater good than helpful, and this is a good example.

Not at all. I think that anyone would celebrate a paid day off, and I don't think it's very charitable to assume that they're trying to provoke jealousy. I don't think your union has the right to tell people what to post on facebook, either.

Honestly I think teachers just can't win. Everything they do is going to make someone mad. Teachers are held to an impossibly high standard and people forget they are real people with real families and very real annoyances with their jobs that have nothing to do with their students. I know several people who aren't teachers who get snow days and I cant imagine anyone ever being annoyed by that. I was a teacher before staying home with my daughter and I never once added a student or parent to my personal Facebook because I felt I was entitled to a private life.

It absolutely does not bother me. My husband is a teacher--he only posts things like this in the summer for break, but he deserves that time off. He loves his job, but it's nice to have a break--it's tough work being a teacher.

Also, I get off on days schools close because of weather conditions, so I like that part, too :)

As for the snow day posts, i have several teachers on my FB and i've never noticed those kinds of posts, don't think it would bother me though.

It depends on the person. I have lots of teacher friends, and some openly complain about their students. I find it incredibly unprofessional and it makes me uncomfortable. As a parent, I would be mortified to learn that a teacher was so openly complaining about my child!

So, when those particular teachers joyfully exclaim that there is a delay or snow day, I don't see it as them rejoicing in having *just* a delay or snowday -- I see it as them having excitement about not having to be near the student(s) they so openly complain of.

Does that make sense?

I don't mind the snow day posts that much. However, I have a FB who's a teacher that bugs me by constantly posting about her vacations. It seems like she has a week off practically every month, and then she posts leading up to it saying she can't wait to get a break, then posts during it about how much it sucks when it's almost over, then she complains that she doesn't get another break for X more weeks.

When you only get 2 weeks of vacation a year, it's a little obnoxious to constantly hear about.

No way, because I would feel the same exact way and I love my job. It's normal to be excited about an unexpected break!

It does bother me a little though when my SIL who is a SAHM brags about her life on FB. Maybe it's because I don't really like her that much lol but the way she words things and constantly brags I feel like she's rubbing it in the faces of those of us who have to work.

@Adira: DH especially hates that too...his male teacher friends ALWAYS text him on snow days to hang out (I think just to bug him, lol)... or the FB posts the night before from people praying for a storm. He has a treacherous commute every morning and it really grinds his gears, lol.

Usually I'm confused until I remember my friends are teachers. I'll see the Facebook post "Snow day!!!" and I'm just "WTF are they talking about - who wants to drive in this snow??" and then I realize they don't have to work because of it.

The thing that DOES annoy me though is when my teacher friends assume OTHER people get days off because of the snow! I had a friend try to make plans with me during a storm and I was like "Uhh, dude, I'm at work..." and she was all "You had to work today??? They don't close your office during a storm??" Umm, no - most businesses can't just shut down because of the weather, geeze! THAT annoyed me.

Doesn't bother me either. I'm not a teacher but I get excited about some of the holidays I get off. Although, I don't always post on Facebook anymore because I'm always afraid someone will take my intention the other way and be offended. When I post things like that on Facebook, it's because I'm expressing my excitement. Not trying to make people jealous. But like I said, if anything sounds like that, I'll delete it.

Also, could this poster be friends with a lot of other teachers who also do the same thing? It might not feel like gloating if your other friends are doing it as well. With favebook and the ability to like posts, maybe this person is trying to 'liked' by peers. I've been guilty of that bug before. Always trying to get as many FB friends to like my statuses.

@char54: I think you make a really good point. It doesn't annoy me for one second when I see those posts from my own friends (I'd never begrudge anyone a snow day!) - but I think if I were a teacher I might feel that all the "yippee I don't have to go to work" posts were damaging to the reputation of my profession. It's like when my husband tells everyone that I stroll into work when I feel like it and come home early every day because I work "in the public sector". I mean - he's right.... but I don't want the world thinking we're not dedicated to our jobs (I work in the evenings and at weekends regulalry).

Usually once the schools cancel, businesses cancel.. so often I found out I'm getting the day off a few hours after all my teacher friends post that they are off. Exception was this week after a huge storm when schools were closed Friday, Monday and Tuesday!! I was rather jealous. But I think it's all in the delivery ;)

It does bother me a little, but what bothers me more are when they are posting andbegging for a snow day our a 2-hour delay. Like you said, not everyone gets those, so sometimes I'm tempted to remind them that the rest of the world doen't share in their enthusiasm for a dangerous commute!

@char54: I agree, since it happens so often, I dont' understand why they have to make a post about it.

@evansjamie: Oh yikes, that's a whole different ball game! That would make me sad, too.

@zippylef: If it was once in a while I wouldn't be bothered, but like I said we get a snow day at least once every couple of weeks so after a while it just seems to be excessive cheering for not having to go to work which comes across to parents that we don't like our job.

Not that I don't do a happy dance when I wake up and can roll back to bed - I just don't think it's necessary to post it publicly every.single.time!
