If I recall correctly she's about 3 months younger than my DD and it was around that time that my DD started learning body parts even though I didn't really teach her them. It was when she started to follow simple commands more consistently too. And at her 15 month appt, the Dr asked how many body parts she knew and by that time she knew a handful at least. </p> <p>Most babies are on track receptive-wise before they are expressive about it. So even if she doesn't repeat things back or sometimes does not carry out commands as one would wish, doesn't mean she doesn't understand it. </p> <p>I like how @babyboymom referred to it as "selective hearing" ... haha. Babies start to understand really well starting around 9 months or so (there was a study not that long ago but I'm too lazy to look for it). I was lying in bed with him, but he kept watching my DH who was getting ready for work. My husband said to him, "Luke, drink your milk and I will buy you a pony". My LO (6.5 months old) said, "OK" and turned back to me. He obviously had no idea what he was saying, but it was such perfect timing. DS is like that too. At 15 mo he will do a lot of things we ask him, like "sit down", even though he never repeats or verbalizes. I think they also create associations, so maybe since washing her foot is something you do during every bath (maybe even in the same order?) she knows the pattern and infer the meaning of "foot". She definitely started understanding things a few months back and now understands pretty much everything I say to her. Olive seems to pick up words in parallel, and if you ask her to repeat a word she usually ignores you. Even now, she doesn't often use the words that I know she already knows. But then sometimes I'll walk into a room and she'll say dada and then I'll leave for work and she'll say bye-bye. But then she won't repeat them right away, or even use them again for quite a while.</p> <p>To my knowledge, she doesn't know what foot means. But maybe she does?
