E eats some daycare food. If I don't like what's on the menu, then I just pack his lunch that day. I pack his snacks every day, because so many of their snacks are crackers, or cookies, or pretzels... too many carbs. I struggled with this for awhile because I seriously can't wrap my head around some of the stuff on the menu (frito pie?!!?) but most days it's kind of healthy and I feed him breakfast and dinner at home, so I can live with one less than stellar meal a day I guess.

My son loves the daycare food because they only serve korean food. They make everything from scratch. He usually eats things like rice with seaweed soup, curry rice, seafood spaghetti, fish cakes, korean beef with rice. He gets really spoiled with the daycare food because they make such delicious food for the kids.

@mediagirl: I think we lost the battle around 14 months? Daycare struggled with it for quite some time before that, hence the comments .... they had to use all sorts of tricks to get her to eat the food that I brought in. So they were getting a bit peeved ...

And we paid almost $2k so I really think they should've had nice, organic meals. Oh well.

@Rubies: That's actually pretty cheap!

@regberadaisy: I think you remember my posts on daycare food. cheez whiz. 'nuff said. I have a copy of all the menus (they rotate through 4 weeks of menus) and i indicate what she cannot have (which is written on the whiteboard). On days where i'm okay with her eating daycare food, i'll pack food to complement it (usually soup with vegetables and quinoa, fruit, veggies). She's a big eater, so i know that daycare food alone wouldn't be enough.

@mediagirl: LOL. It really makes a difference where one lives. I live in a suburb about 20 minutes outside of Toronto, so it's cheaper. My friend goes to a daycare right inside Toronto and she pays double what I do for a lot less!

@mediagirl: ditto! The morning snacks seem OK but the afternoon snacks are less desirable. Pudding? No thanks. Lunch often has WW bread...why does my 1 year old need to eat WW bread???

And agree the other center that was my top choice but about $100/week more has a full kitchen and they cook on site.

@Andrea: when did she decide she wanted what everyone else was having?

I currently send her food and will keep sending it as long as they will let me. I, too am the only parent who sends in her food. I just don't like some of their choices. Lunches, fine. When she's a little older, I'll let her eat the lunches. Snacks - I do not want her eating sugary cereals or things like that so I will supplement those with cheerios or other low sugar items.

LO eats daycare provided lunches and snacks every day.

They make all their food in-house from scratch and the options are pretty varied and healthy. They don't use any products containing high fructose corn syrup and only use organic meat from a local, humane small farm (which is top of the line meat, it's what we eat at home and what many of the better restaurants around us serve). They also serve only low-sugar options for yogurt, cream cheese, etc and all the breads they serve are whole wheat (except cornbread, and maybe some muffins - but those are all made in-house).

Typical menu items for lunch are things like: soups (Italian wedding, chili with cheese, chicken noodle, minestrone), teryaki chicken stir fry with brown rice, baked chicken with veggies, cheese pizza on whole wheat crust, lasagna, veggie burgers, fajitas, Boston baked beans and veggie hotdogs, "thanksgiving" (turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans), ham, turkey or veggie pita sandwiches, chicken salad.

With lunch they always get a bread type item, fresh veggie and fresh fruit.

Afternoon snacks are things like goldfish crackers, cheese and crackers, always with more fruit.

Our daycare only provides morning/afternoon snacks which is always something considered "healthy." In the beginning it was a struggle to think of things to give her for lunch, especially since she wasn't used to really sitting and eating a meal but we've figured out a good routine since then.

My 4 year old does eat the food there. They have so many guidelines to follow with fruits and vegtables that I feel she gets a pretty good meal. Plus they make things that I don't think to try- like beets. Both of my girls loved the beets this daycare serves

DD eats two meals and a snack at daycare, which they provide. They have a parent advisory committee, which recently helped overhaul the menu so it's healthier. But she only goes twice a week, so I'm not too concerned if they don't serve all organic, super healthy food, because that's not how we eat at home either.

I also feel meh about daycare food, but I have no time to prepare special food for DD. Also the daycare food is included in the price of daycare anyways, and DD seems very happy with it. We stick to mostly organic and healthier foods at home, so I think she's at least getting some of the benefits.

Yes, C eats both snacks and lunch at daycare with the food provided. They have a wide ranch of food from local restaurants delivered daily so it will be anything from meatloaf to a grilled chicken sandwich to whole foods pizza to turkey meatballs to spinach lasagna, etc. for a lunch entree with fresh fruits and veggies and rice or pita bread, etc. for sides. For snacks it is anything from yogurt to applesauce to cheerios to fresh fruit to bagels to cheese and crackers, etc. I'm okay with it and having some foods like carrots at daycare has encouraged C to eat them at home too.

She did and it was so-so in terms of being healthy. It was the usual "kid food" like pizza, tacos, spaghetti etc with a steamed veg and cut up fruit. Nothing was organic, though. I tried sticking with my own food for a while but guess what ... I was the ONLY parent doing so. My kid just wanted to eat what everyone else was eating so that was the end of that. Oh well, it does make your life a lot easier!
