@skipra: how old were they when you did this? And did you do the moving further away the same night/time? Or over multiple nights? If that makes sense... Ie move gradually away the same night, or move further and further away over several nights.

We had to re-train at 15 months and it did work, but it was a process. For 3 nights my husband slept on the floor of my son's room so that he was there in the night if he woke up - the first night he held his hand, then he moved further and further from the crib towards the door. Then for 3 nights after that we sat outside the door while he fell asleep shushing him. He still cries when he put him in his crib but only for a few minutes now.

My LO's were older when we sleep trained. CIO did not work for either of them at all. It just made things worse. My oldest beca me terrified of his crib and bedtime when we tried CIO.
Anyway, what worked for LO1 and seems to be working for LO2 is to tell them I will stay in the room as long as they are quiet and lying down. Once they stand or start screaming I leave the room for a couple minutes. They quickly figure it out! At first I sit right next to the crib and rub head or back. As they get used to it, don't touch, move further away, leave the room, etc. I can't promise it will work for you but it has been the only thing to work for us. Good luck!

Not us. We did Ferber (is that modified CIO?) at 4 months and it worked like a charm. We recently had to re-train after illness, at 19 months, and checks only made him more angry. So we had to shut the door and wait it out. :( It only took one night though, thankfully.

I hope you find something that works! I know it wouldn't work for either of my kids. With my 13 month old, he starts screaming as soon as he realizes it's bedtime and he keeps crying until I leave the room. But once I shut that door, he stops and goes to sleep. I know staying in the room would just make it harder for both of us, but I can't understand your reluctance to do CIO. Hope you find a solution soon! :goodluck:

It worked for my LO around that age. He was getting up frequently to nurse, and I was so tired. I let DH handle it, and LO's sleep improved pretty quickly. LO is now 2 years old, and I think we need to try it again. :bummed:

Anyone been successful with a modified CIO for their toddler?

I have a 12 month old who takes an hour to fall asleep at bedtime after a mixture of rocking and rubbing her back in the crib. She also wakes up in the middle of the night multiple times and only falls asleep for good if we put her in bed with us (we are all in the same bedroom), otherwise she falls asleep for a little bit in her crib only to wake up half hour later again.

I have tried a modified CIO where I stay in the room with her and sing songs while she cries hysterically without taking her out of crib, but it's not really working. I don't have the heart to leave the room because she is a stubborn one and screams at the top of her lungs (like someone is cutting her open) and I feel bad...

Any advice appreciated.

TIA
