Definitely bittersweet. Even if you have a LO and your relationship with your Mom is good, maybe you lost a grandmother/aunt or have a friend who is struggling with infertility, or has lost a baby. There are good things and sad things about it!

Its a hard day, I lost my mom and it stings that we can't be together for mother's day. I would give anything to spend the day with her. I got really upset at the store the other day trying to pick something out for her to put on her grave. I want to BH uy something for her to wear or put in her house BC she should still be here. I want to have the kids make her a photo collage and homemade cards to her and see her face light up.

Last year and every other year Mother's Day has made me full of hope that I would be celebrating the next year.

This year, with AF just started and the miscarriage still fresh in my mind, I am dreading it.

Yes, it is bittersweet. I lost my own mom a few years back and I also miscarried a baby that would have been due in May, so it will always remind me of those losses. I am so grateful to be a mom now, but I don't think Mother's Day will ever be without some sadness for me.

I was waiting to meet my team for a 5K last weekend and guy stopped and asked us for directions. As he was walking away he wished me a happy mother's day.

I've been to a few churches that offer flowers or some other token to all women on mothers day.

It's not until this year that I realize how that can be kind of hurtful to those who have been able to conceive.

No it doesn't. I celebrate my mother on a regular basis and my son's too young to really get it. He honors me in many other ways.

I never thought about those women out there that want to be parents but are not, I do think it's a valid feeling to be sad when it seems like everyone around you is celebrating and you are not...like when everyone around you is getting engaged and you're unhappily single.

Not really. I'm pretty into holidays and I enjoy spending the day with my mom and family. I definitely feel more sympathetic to people who want to be mothers and aren't able since ttc and having LO. My husband has a generally good relationship with his mom but she lives far away and they aren't as big on holidays. We send flowers and cards and I don't think that makes him sad. I mostly feel like the good thing about being an adult is making your own traditions and doing exactly what you want on holidays.

@swurlygurl: It makes me sad. My mom passed away almost 10 years ago and now that I'm a mom it makes me miss her even more. Its really hard when Mother's Day falls on my birthday (this year it does).

I try not to let it get to me because DH's mom is awesome, but I wish I was buying my mother similar gifts from DD.

Sort of? I have a bad relationship with my mom, so every mother's day it's a struggle of do I get a card? Do I not get a card? Is there a generic card that doesn't say anything too mushy or heartfelt, because I don't feel that way? I'd say it gives me anxiety more than it makes me sad, but either way, not a positive emotion.

I always felt like my mom put a lot of pressure on us kids to buy her presents and acknowledge the day as much as possible, so it's just not my favorite holiday.

@Greentea: this is how I feel too!

My husband and I are both very un-holiday. I always feel that there are a lot of expectations and pressure and it's a pity to be disappointed or sad about a holiday since people are expected to feel a certain way about that day. As for Mother's Day specifically, as someone who lost her mother, I try not to think about it.

@swurlygurl: omg that's why I am anti-holidays! I mean, in general I think they are *sad-making* things. For a variety of reasons.

I actually love mother's day now that I am a mom! I do totally get it though- holidays bring out complex emotions.

I love being a mom but I'll be happy if my kids are away IF they are happy. I just don't put much stock in holidays. I think they make people feel bad and are meant to and set up pressure so you consume. Everyday is a holiday :silly:

I think becoming a mum myself has made me see everything in a slightly different light - I always thought I was a pretty sensitive person but had no idea how selfish I was, where my own mum was concerned, before. That said, we still make the effort to celebrate both of our mums on mothers day, even post baby.

I have a work colleague who can't have children of her own and lost her own mum three years ago around the mother's day time of year. She had a few too many to drink on mothers day this year (it was a few weeks ago here in the UK) and posted a really raw status on Facebook - it was so sad.

I think being pregnant in general has made me think a lot more about my relationship with my parents as an adult, and my husband's with his parents, and what I hope for my relationship with my daughter.

My husband is not really close with his family at all and he haaaates mothers/fathers day because it means he has to call his parents which is like, the worst thing in the world to him. And I have to harass him into remembering to send a gift. It never really bugged me before because he has a complicated relationship with them and I felt like it was his prerogative as an adult to decide what sort of relationship he wants with his family.

But now that we're having our daughter it breaks my heart to think she could ever hate calling me on mother's day! I really hope that I have a relationship with her that is more like mine with my mom (where I actually enjoy spending time with her and want her to be a regular part of our everyday lives) vs. what my husband has with his family.

I'm not speaking to my mom, and this has been the hardest time for me. It's really hard to hear all the commercials/special Mother's Day things going on, it's a constant reminder about our issues.

For your case, try to remember that your mom and grandmother both probably got at least 18 good mothers days in their life, and you should try to enjoy the ones you have with your family. Like you said, it sucks, but it's the circle of life ( cue lion king music). Sorry you're feeling down though!
