@KayKay: Sounds really similar to DD!! I guess I wouldn't be surprised if she had a higher metabolism, she does still eat every 2 to 3 hours during the day too.

@Boopers: Oh man. I hate sleep regressions!!

@delight: I'm super really crossing my fingers she's close to STTN!'

I would also just feed her if it was just the one wake up at that point. I would also try giving solids 3x a day. My son is 11 months and just started sleeping through the night within the last few weeks. At 9 months he was still doing the early morning wake up. Like yours, he settled right back down after feeding so I just went with it. I bet your DD is close to STTN. Just stick it out a little while longer

DS1 woke up to eat until a year old. I would still feed in the MOTN if I were you.

I remember this time being harder than the 4 month sleep regression. Things will get better soon!

@irunforfun: maybe just a fluke!

My 10m LO3 is very similar. He was/is sensitive to dairy, so I don't do a ton of cheese/yogurt/milk products. He is only 5th percentile, but has been since 4m. He STTN from about 6w-4m, but since then he wakes up every 3-5h to eat all night long. It's annoying, but he otherwise puts himself to sleep (naps and night) and will holler for at least an hour if I try to wait to see if he will settle himself. He eats well during the day (3+ meals or snacks of some amount of solids + 4-5 nursing sessions) but is just super-active. The ped said he probably just has a high metabolism. I would love for him to drop the feeds himself, and occasionally he will give us a night with a 6-7h stretch, but like you, I'm not going to be up all night because he is hollering that I'm not filling his hungry belly :) We also have 2 other kids, though, so we have whack-a-mole going most nights.

I say to just go with whatever you're more comfortable with. If the wake-ups bother you more than the temporary sleep-training/not feeding/potential guilt would, then just feed her and go back to sleep. But if you're really struggling with the current schedule, then give it a shot.

I'd just get up and feed her. My DS is 8 months and still gets up at least two times to nurse during the night. It's killing me but I'm a firm believer in following his cues. I know lots of people say to sleep train and to cut out the night feeds but I'm not going to . He's in the 20th percentile for weight so I'm fine getting him some extra calories. He eats 3 puree meals a day and some other stuff (puffs/fruit) he can feed himself.

I'm sure that at some point he'll just grow out of the night feedings.

ETA: my ped said it was ok to nurse during the night for my DS but I have a friend who's baby is same age (2 day diff) and the same ped told her to cut it out BUT her son is 4 LBS bigger than DS and is in the 90th percentile.... so I assume the different recommendations have to do with that.

@Pollywog: I really need to try her on tree nuts so I can give her the almond milk yogurt!

@LBee: How weird!! I'm so ready for it to vanish, I keep telling DH I just want to wake up one morning at 7 and realize she STTN.

@Ina85: Thanks, I do think I'm going to try just feeding right away.

@Irunforfun: I think you should just feed her right away and she can go back to sleep and you can as well. My daughter will be 9 months next week and she still has 1 motn feed at 3:30 or 4 am. She goes to sleep at 6:30-7 and wakes up around 7:30am. She nurses about 7-8x's/day and has solids twice a day for lunch and dinner. I don't mind the motn feed, it's quick and I'll keep doing it until she stops. I plan to wean from nursing after she turns 1, so we'll see how things go. Oh and she's in the 90th percentile for weight and height and she still nurses like she needs the motn feed.

This happened with T at 8 months! He had been sleeping through the night for months and then suddenly started waking up seemingly starving. It was so random I actually scribbled about it occurring at the top of his (pretty much empty) baby book. It just suddenly vanished around 9.5 months and he went back to normal.

@IRunForFun: my kiddo needed food around that age. He was growing so much that he was starving.

He was also MSPI. Almond milk yogurt was super fatty and calorie dense. I also added oil to veggies to fatten them up. I also had him on solids three times a day at that point. I'd try and add more calorie heavy foods before bed.

I'd feed! My booger is on solids 3x a day and seems starving in the MOTN and morning. I actually still do a "dream feed" right before I go to bed so that she'll let me sleep 11 until 6ish.

@sillymilly: Interesting. She does wake up briefly a couple other times throughout the night and cries out or fusses, but she usually resettles after 5 to 10 mins. If she was having multiple long wake ups then required attention then I'd consider sleep training.

@gingerbebe: DD has reflux too. She is still on a PPI. I'm not super worried about her weight since she's been on the same curve since about 3 months, but at the same time, she doesn't have a lot of wiggle room if she were to drop.

@kiddosc: You're probably right about the metabolism thing!

@petitenoisette: I definitely think I could deal better with one wake up if it was just a quick one.

@Mrs. Champagne: Thanks, I think I'm going to go ahead and just do that now and see what happens. I'm tired of playing the "will she go back to sleep?" when she NEVER does. So I always lose. :silly:

I so far agree to A) beefing up day time eating and maybe giving a bigger bottle before bed to see if it helps, or B) have a bottle pretty much ready and just get it over with quickly

DD1 night weaned herself around 6-7 months, so her wake-ups after that were never about hunger. This DD is a boob monster so she's up a few times. I tolerate it b/c I kind of need her demand to keep my supply up...

Personally I'd just feed her. I would try it out and as long as she stuck to one wake up then reevaluate in a couple months. I am not opposed to sleep training but I also found that once we were down to 1 quick wake up that I could deal with that for a long time.

My LO also did not really eat solids until after she was 12 months and even then it took a while before I felt it really got her any calories so I wouldn't really count on solids much if your LO isn't too into them.

Both of my kids needed MOTN feeds well past 9 months. One until a year and one until 14 months. It sounds like your LO is genuinely hungry from the way you describe it. I would go in and feed right away and get everyone back to sleep quicker. Also, FWIW, no amount of additional breastmilk or solids got my kids to sleep through the night. They always woke up hungry, no matter how much they ate... I think some kids just have a higher night time metabolism.

@IRunForFun: I know its so hard - my 3 year old had a lot of feeding issues because of reflux so did not find any joy in milk or food so it was SO HARD to keep his weight up. Once he was on solids and I pushed a lot of fat, he was at 50th percentile at his 1 year (or was it 18 month?) and my doctor told me I could relax. That said, my kid just had his 3 year check and grew so tall recently, he's technically considered underweight again and I'm back to bulking him up!

My pediatrician is pretty firmly in the camp that after 6 months old, MOTN feeds aren't necessary and consistent wake ups are habit. And she told me this right after she told me my dd was in the 1st % for weight. But, I also totally understand/agree that it can be so much easier to nurse back to sleep. My daughter went through a sleep regression around 6.5 months as well where she did a similar wake up once around 3 or 4 am, and I would go in and feed her and in 10 minutes she'd be back down. She steadily increased wake ups to 2 or 3 times a night, so we sleep trained her and she's been STTN since. FWIW, my pediatrician has strongly encouraged solids for weight gain. At 9 months now we do 3 meals a day, though she is not a great eater (maybe 2 oz max per feeding), and she did increase from the 1st % to 11th % between her 6 and 9 month check ups, so I hope your daughter will continue to gain as she eats more solids too!

I'm not sure that all babies necessarily need a feed at 9 months but it sounds like yours is actually hungry. FWIW my daughter nursed 1-2 times in the MOTN until she was about one. We never tried any type of sleep training and she just stopped needing those feeds eventually.

If I were you I'd just let her nurse and hope she grows out of it. Plus hopefully that would cut down on the amount of time you're awake!

@IRunForFun: Yes, that's even harder. I literally put fat in everything for my son, so I would totally do coconut oil! It tastes so good/neutral with all fruits. Peanut butter is awesome! We make a lot of Asian style congee/rice porridge type meals that are more savory for the kids and they always taste better with a hefty dose of toasted sesame seed oil. Can she have eggs? One dish the kids love is rice porridge made from just simmering cooked rice in water with some finely minced veggies until soft, adding in 1-2 beaten eggs and furiously beating it into the hot mixture so it becomes custardy, then seasoning with salt and lots of sesame oil. If you don't have cooked rice, cream of rice cereal works or grits will work just as well.

French fries worked well for my kids as a finger food. We also did sweet potato fries tossed in a TON of coconut oil (the flavors just meld really well) sprinkled with cinnamon.

I also did this thing that was sorta like mashed sushi rolls - warm rice mushed up with lots of avocado, a little lemon juice and salt or soy sauce, a pinch of sugar, canned salmon or tuna fish, and sesame seeds. You can add a little hot water to loosen it up if needed.

We also did lots of Thai coconut curry using coconut CREAM instead of coconut milk. We'd make mild green or red curry - this is our favorite, but we used coconut cream and a bag of frozen stirfry veggies, cooked until the veggies were very soft. I'd just take a portion aside for the kids and add the spices later for the adults and then blitz them in a little food chopper with basmati rice for a fatty protein rich meal:

I would just feed her! 9 months can be a time of huge development. My guy learned to crawl, stand, scoot, and popped 6 teeth between 9 and 10 months. His sleep definitely got worse and he was hungrier for several weeks (day and night). I just fed him when he woke and his sleep went back to normal once things settled.

About food, fwiw my guy eats a super minimal amount right now (he has feeding issues and needs intervention) and he still sleeps pretty much the same as my oldest, who ate at ton at this age. I'm not convinced that solids will do much to help them sleep. I feel like they will figure it out when they do (I also sleep trained both kids but not for STTN).

@gingerbebe: Interesting! I so wish I could give her things like whole fat yogurt, butter and cheese, but she can't have dairy. :bummed: The milk alternative yogurts just aren't calorie dense. I've been mixing avocado into her food if it's a purée because she doesn't really like it plain, and she loves peanut butter so we've been doing some of that. I've been considering mixing some coconut oil into her stuff...

@Smurfette: Yeah I feel like if I just go to her right away, feed, put her back down, I could be awake 30 mins vs 90.

@IRunForFun: So my firstborn struggled with weight gain, and at 9 months, he was on 3 meals of solids per day as breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We had milk first, then solids. We also did snack twice a day with water. He took milk 4 times a day, before each meal, and before bedtime, but we trained to not have milk as part of his sleeping/napping routine. I made his afternoon snack something more filling like whole milk yogurt. Morning snack was something light, like puffs or Cheerios. I tried to make his meals as calorie dense as possible, since he didn't eat a huge volume. So I'd make things like risotto with lots of butter and cheese, or vegetable beef soup blitzed into a thick puree with the addition of cooked rice, oatmeal with eggs beaten into them, etc. He slept 12 hours a night and even when he had night wakings, I can't recall a time it was out of hunger.

Sounds like she is hungry. I know we both have babies that are smaller in size, so I would just feed her. If mine wakes up, we do a small bottle and she passes back out usually as soon as we put her back in the crib. I figure the calories don't hurt and it takes 10 mins top.

@gingerbebe: Yeah, I'm wondering...pedi said solids 2x per day right now. She's getting them after her morning nap and then about 2 hours before bed time. She still isn't great with solids but maybe I can just start giving her what I know she'll eat a lot of for that second solids feeding and also consider adding in a 3rd one. She's tiny - 4th percentile on weight - so that's another reason I'm hesitant to cut the MOTN feed.

It sounds like she is genuinely hungry, but I feel like she can be getting more calories in during the day. At 9 months, you can do solids 3 times a day, maybe make them more calorie dense in the evening, and see if that helps?

OK so, let me preface this by saying that we haven't really needed to do any sleep training at this point. DD started sleeping in her crib around 3.5 months, and from then to a little after 6 months, she regularly STTN from 7:30 to 7.

Around 6.5 months she started waking up once a night a few times a week. I'd let her fuss for a while (she doesn't really do outright crying unless something is truly wrong) and if she didn't go back to sleep or the fussing really escalated after 30 to 45 mins I'd go in, change her diaper, nurse her, and she'd go right back to sleep.

Now she's almost 9 months and for at least the past month she's been waking up every single night between 3 and 4 am. I'm still letting her fuss and try to work it out for quite a while, up to 45 mins, but she never goes back to sleep until I get up and nurse her. When I do, she eats as if she's starving, and then when I put her in the crib she goes straight back to sleep. We've tried comforting her without the nursing (checking her diaper, patting her back, sometimes rocking, etc) and she might go back to sleep for a couple of minutes and wakes back up.

It's driving me crazy because, for the time I'm letting her fuss, I'm awake, and since she NEVER goes back to sleep on her own, by the time I do go get her and feed her and get back to bed, I've been awake for like 90 mins. I feel like if I just tended to her right away we'd both get back to sleep more quickly, but I also don't want to keep reinforcing that if she wakes up she gets to eat if she truly doesn't need to.

FWIW, she nurses 7 to 8x per day when you add in the MOTN feed, and she also gets solids twice a day. She is up for the day around 7, takes a 2 hour morning nap, a 60 to 90 min afternoon nap, and goes to bed between 7 and 7:30.

Any insights here? Should I take one night and resolve to just not go get her and see how long it takes her to go back to sleep (if she ever does)? Or just keep doing what I'm doing and hope she goes back to STTN on her own soon?

I know one MOTN wake up isn't horrible, it's just that I'm awake for so long during it...
