Thank you so much for all the answers, I'll bring it up with our pedi at the next visit. I'm hoping to continue bf for a couple of months longer.

I don't do it. I take vit D supplements for myself, though. I find that they make a big difference in my mood all winter long.

Our ped. had us start vitamin d drops early on--though said I really didn't have to give them in the spring/summer if I was taking LO out daily. I give her them every day in the winter. Didn't need to do iron supplementation, our doc said we should just make sure to feed her iron-rich foods, which we do.

Our ped had us start poly-vi-sol with iron at her first appointment and said to continue as long as I'm breastfeeding. Some days we forget and don't stress over it.

@lemong: @Bao: I ordered the baby ones and paid the $15, it didn't come with a dropper though. Maybe they've changed it? I just tip the bottle upside down and it slooowly forms a drop!

I was also told to give D from day one, and that we'll have to use poly-vi-sol at 4 months.

I've heard that bf babies are fine. Living in a area where vitamin d deficiency is a concern I asked her ped and he said there's no reason to right now and we can reevaluate at a later date.

Doc told us to do vitamin d drops once a day. He said he only has parents give them to babies born in the winter (summer babies get enough sunlight and don't need to supplement in his opinion). So we'll probably give them to her until sometime around April... Or whenever it gets warm enough to be outside a lot.

@Bao - we use these Carlson drops in which all you need is one drop and you're set! I just put a drop on my nipple before I feed her. You can put it on a pacifier as well. Even though the label says for kids and not babies, it's the same thing, just minus a special dropper. The baby D formula is more expensive because of the specialized dropper that you really don't need.

My pediatrician basically said as long as he gets some time in the sun for vitamin d and he's getting iron rich foods (spinach, kale, sweet potatoes, beef, etc ) we don't need to worry about supplementing. And, as long as you get enough iron in your diet they get it in your breastmilk as well!

I have heard that after the first 6 months of baby's life the need for iron and vitamin D increases dramatically, and that breastfed babies need supplements. I'm getting lost in the information jungle online and would appreciate your experience, did you supplement or not?

DS is approaching 6 months and EBF but we have started introducing tasters of fruits and veggies. He refuses to drink formula and I don't see that changing any time soon.
