My son sleeps better at night if he has 2 naps, so right now, I let him have a morning and an afternoon nap. The morning nap is about 3 hours after he wakes and the afternoon is 4 hours after he wakes from the morning nap. Bedtime is 4 hours after he wakes from his afternoon nap.

I didn't purposely shorten his night sleep to get longer day naps, he just kind of did this himself.

Definitely don't shorten her nighttime sleep.

I would start trying to put her down for a nap earlier. DD was a TERRIBLE napper and I just recently started putting her down for a nap 90 minutes after she woke up (whether it be her morning waking or from a nap) and it's been going MUCH MUCH better! She takes atleast 4 naps a day the morning and mid afternoon being right at about 30 min, her second nap being atleast an hour, and her late afternoon nap right about 45 minutes. No, they aren't long naps BUT she's definitely more rested during the day and she's actually happy between naps now (something that she definitely wasn't before).

It usually takes me 10-15 min to get her down (change dipe, nurse/pat bottom) & sometimes it takes me 20 minutes to get her down but going by the clock and not her cues means I don't "miss" her sleep time and then she get overtired, which is pretty much how it had been going... and I haven't had to do any CIO.

After the last 1 1/2 weeks of doing this new parent/child led nap schedule I'm certain that the main issue had been her being overtired and fighting daytime sleep.

Now just for her to finish cutting this tooth so she can get back to waking less during the night! lol

Some babies are just not good nappers. I'm not sure about moving some of her night sleep to day sleep though. I would keep her night sleep as is, but it may change once she gets more daytime naps in. Ever since she dropped down to 3 naps, her nighttime sleep has increased to 11 hours.

Have you ever thought about not going to her when she wakes up after her first cycle? I've recently stopped going to her after she wakes up from her first cycle, and will wait 20 minutes. She will usually go back to sleep...if she is still awake after 20 minutes, then i'll go to her.

A 1.5 hr stretch is pretty good. I find that even after a 45 minute nap, LO is refreshed and happier than if she was up for 4 hours straight.

Your LO sounds a lot like mine was at 4 months...he is still not a stellar napper at 6.5 months. Everything that I've read says that night sleep is far more restorative than day sleep so I would personally prefer a baby that sleeps a lot at night...which yours does! I don't think you can actually transfer night sleep to day sleep though. I know the fussiness is hard to deal with but like all things baby, it's a phase that will pass!

4 months was a tough time. My LO was super fussy and started to nap a bit better at that age. Things got better at 4.5 months but we are back to major fussiness now because we are transitioning to 2 naps.

I'm no pro at this but my daughter sort of went through the same thing. She slept 730p-7a with none or one night waking but could only last about 40-60 minutes between naps, including feeding. It basically felt like she was up long enough to nurse, change diaper, then play for only 10-20 minutes before it was time to put her down again. I don't know how many naps she took daily because I would just put her down either when she showed tired cues or 1 hour, whichever came first. Our friends would comment that she sleeps too much but every baby is different and she didn't seem to be able to stay up longer than an hour at a time. Only around 5.5 months were we able to stretch it to 1.5 hours. Now at 7 months she can stay up for up to 2-2.5 hours between naps and it's easier to plan outings.

Hang in there! Some babies are just sleepier. =)

I think night time sleep is important so I wouldn't mess with that! I would vote for more naps instead!

My LO used to sleep like that when he was around that age. At around 6 months, his naps became less frequent but longer. I think it's pretty common for babies at 4 months to have long sleep cycles and short nap cycles. If she's fussy, I would try to squeeze in more naps if possible.

Lol yep. No advice but Ts behavior is the same way except he naps more and sleeps less overnight. Usually 10 hrs overnight, 1 long morning nap (2-2.5 hrs) and then 40 minute naps the rest of the day. He used to nap more! He does best when awake time is 1.5 hours between sleeps....

My LO is 4 months old and has always been a bad napper but a great night sleeper (this last month aside, we've been dealing with the 4month regression). Even though she gets 12-13 hours at night, 11.5-12.5 with wakings, she seems overtired all day.

She gets fussy after being up as little as 40mins sometimes, some days shows tired cues within minutes of waking from a nap at times and becomes less social and focused probably halfway through her awake time. Usually her awake time is 1.5-2hrs.

Her naps sometimes last up to 1.5hrs but never consistently, when they do its often because I've rocked her back down after her first cycle. On a typical day I might one long nap about and two 30-40 minute naps or some days 4 short naps.

Do you think to help her stay more happy and focused during the day I should transition some of her sleep from night to naps? Or just add naps/stretch her existing naps to her current length of night time sleep?
