Seems normal to me. My oldest cried before naps and my youngest does that now. It's usually for a few seconds though but sometimes for a few minutes. My oldest stopped doing that after a while. I forget when. I do find that if I read his sleepy cues right he won't cry.

I agree it can be different with every child. With m I noticed that if I put her down for a nap 2 hrs from her last wake up it's virtually seamless. And it's important she gets an hr minimum for the first nap otherwise she's a demon child!

Wow, guys. My son just went down for his morning nap without a single cry. He moaned for maybe 1 minute then just fell asleep! No bottle before bed, just our newish routine (as of 1 week ago..) - book, diaper change, lay in crib and put on sleep sack and listen to mobile music, turn off lights and turn on sound machine, sit with mommy in rocker and rock for two Twinkle Twinkle renditions. Now, let's see how long he sleeps!

I know every baby is different but at that age I would stretch my LO to 2 hrs between naps and that helped to get one longer nap a day (then two 45-minute naps...or sometimes 2 long and one short). For us, we got more crying/protesting if we put him down too early rather than too late. If we put him down too late then he'd fall asleep right away but take a super short nap (<30 minutes).

I think 5-6 minutes of fussing/crying at put down is actually great! I know it sucks to hear him cry but in the grand scheme of things, that is a pretty short amount of time and he is falling asleep by himself every time.

@Mrs. Bee: He is 4.5 months old. His awake time is 1.5-1.75 hours. I'm trying for a more set schedule but he is the king of the 30 minute nap even when I put him down drowsy but awake. (Ie, I can't say he has naps at 9, 1 and 4 because he only naps 30 minutes). He goes to bed at 7/7:30 and is in his crib 12 hours, usually with 2 wakes. Have tried super early bedtime but it usually results in lots of protest.

I just put him down aftert 1 hr 20 minutes of awake time and it produced mega tears but for only 3 minutes........now, lets see how long he sleeps..........EDIT: he slept 34 minutes. Sigh.

@winniebee: LO does this for some of her naps. We just let her fuss it out and then she falls asleep. She never does it at bedtime though, and thats when we just lay her in the crib. I still rock her asleep for naps.

@winniebee: how old is your lo and what is his schedule?

olive was sick for 2 weeks recently so we rocked/nursed her to sleep during that time and then had to re nap train. for a week she cried anywhere from 1-5 minutes before naps, but now she's back on track and doesn't cry at all.

@winniebee: 45 minutes is standard for my guy unless he is more tired (like, less sleep the night before, or missed middle nap).

I'm not sure... I think I have come to accept the fact that my son just cries/fusses as part of falling asleep. We sleep and nap trained him and he sleeps better, but he still fusses for 10 minutes before falling asleep. Sometimes it is full-on crying too, but then he just zonks out. If I were to try to put him to bed any earlier, he wouldn't go down so I think perfect timing is out the window with him.

@cvbee: Thx! I'm not sure if what I'm doing is nap training, but I'm trying...have put him down without milk for his morning nap the last few days. He's still only sleeping 45 mins, but I'm hoping that that will increase with time.

@winniebee: I think this is only true after you have sleep trained. That is my experience anyway. Before sleep training, the only method that produced no tears was nurse/rock/bounce to sleep. Didn't matter how perfect my timing was, if I was putting him down anything less than almost-asleep he would wake up and protest.

Post-sleep-training I have had no-tears put-to-sleeps with perfect timing, but usually he at least lets out a little whine. (okay, so technically no tears, but a complaint). As I've mentioned before to you, now, if he cries I know my timing is indeed off (so then I nurse to sleep).

@Mrs. Bee: So.....if my son has tears before each nap (this morning about 6 minutes....) do we think that means I have waited too long? I would think it was *just* me, but like I said he cries in the stroller before he falls asleep, too!

it was true for charlie. i mean like down to the minute, esp when he was younger. as he got older (9 months+), perfect timing didn't matter as much.

olive is s little more flexible and we can push her an extra 30 min. but she doesn't cry at naps either.

i do believe some babies just cry to release tension.

It's true for my LO. When I time it perfectly, he will fall asleep within a few minutes of being put in his crib. If I'm a little off, he may "complain" a bit and then fall asleep.

However, I have read that some babies just need to blow off some steam before falling asleep.

I think that sometimes tears are inevitable no matter what. For instance, I know a little girl who cried every morning at daycare dropoff for an entire year no matter what her mom tried. And Wagon Jr. has woken up crying almost every night since he was born... and he's 2 years 9 months now. We've tried everything we can think of to avoid that crying wakeup, and most nights it just comes no matter what.

That being said, Wagon Jr. cried at naptime every time but grew out of it pretty quickly once he was nap trained. Sometimes I thought he actually needed to cry to get some energy out and really be tired for his nap!

I agree with your sister. My LO had to fuss it out when she was little too. But she grew out of it, now there are no more tears.... except maybe once every couple of months when she's having too much fun and doesn't want to go down.

HSHC insists that if you time a nap perfectly, there will be little to no tears.

We have very few tears at bedtime these days. But naps are a different story regardless of what I do. I've tried shorter awake time, longer awake times, but stick to the same general routine. There are always at least 5 minutes of tears (unless he falls asleep at the bottle...a no no, I know). Even if we are on a walk or in the car, he cries before he falls asleep.

My sister insists that her first born was just like this and some babies just cry before they go down.

Thoughts?
