No wrapping - just stockings and in wrapped gifts!

Growing up santa always did the BIG gifts and our stockings. I did this last year (bounce house) but have since decided that santa is going to just do stockings and a few smaller unwrapped gifts...I don't need my kid being the one to break another kids heart when santa brings them a bounce house but can't afford to bring them something big...

This year mommy and daddy are getting credit for the big stuff! :silly:

our santa never wrapped! usually there would be a stocking with no toys wrapped and then a couple of gifts outside of it, also unwrapped and set up, which usually included the "main" present i was hoping for that year. i thought it was so fun to get to come out and immediately spy what you got--i remember getting an american girl doll (samantha--i am old haha) one year and being BESIDE myself with excitement because i had wanted it for two christmases.

so we've so far done the same thing but some of these beautiful santa packages have made me start to re-think! maybe we can do a mix.

Santa wraps! What I've done for big stuff is even assemble and then "wrap" it. The stocking stuff is generally unwrapped.

Growing up, our Santa didn't wrap. I only have 1 brother and our gifts were on separate couches. Most of the gifts were in the original packages. There would be 1-2 gifts from my parents, and they would be wrapped in special paper (mine was teddy bears, I can't remember what my brothers was).

"Our" Santa wraps everything. Each child has 1-2 special wrapping paper (different every year), depending on what they're "into" that year (Star Wars, Paw Patrol, and Disney Princesses this year). We typically give the kids a joint present from us (big wagon or something), which depending on size, is wrapped in a different paper.

This year we don't have a joint present, so I'm not sure what we are going to do there....

@kiddosc: Yep, it went pretty quick once you identified which pile of gifts was yours. But Santa also brought our Christmas tree and decorated it so that was part of the excitement too. We are hoping to carry on that tradition.

@Bluemasonjar: Wait... so you'd come into the room at your Mom's house and all the gifts would just be sitting there? Nothing to unwrap?! That must make for a quick Christmas morning! :silly:

So interesting to hear all of the different Santa traditions! I LOVE the kraft paper and tags from Santa but at our house he doesn't wrap any of the gifts or stockings. DS is only 2 this year so we are still defining some of our traditions but growing up my divorced parents did Christmas differently.

My Mom's house gifts were unwrapped and everything came from Santa except for 1 wrapped gift from our grandparents (usually clothes so they could be returned/exchanged if needed). Even my Mom got a few things from Santa. My Dad's house the gifts are all wrapped and some are from Santa some are from my Dad and Step Mom. She didn't even use separate paper though which I think is important for keeping up the mystery. My Mom gets super into Christmas and is big into keeping traditions and it made for such a fun holiday.

Growing up, Santa's presents were all unwrapped and assembled and put out Christmas Eve night. My parents bought us other presents, which were wrapped and under the tree with all the other gifts. Santa usually brought the fun stuff, and presents from parents were more practical, like clothes.

We basically do the same now, except I try to scale back on the amount of gifts. My mom is one of those people who always went super overboard on Christmas. We try to be a little more realistic about storage space and the amount of things our daughter really needs. (I just wish all her grandparents would do the same...)

@kiddosc: My Christmas sounds the same as your partners and my DH’s Christmas sounds the same as yours.
I think that’s a decent compromise.
Something I also just thought of, I’ll be the one actually wrapping them... so maybe if I don’t then I don’t have to worry about it at all lol.

E will be 5 this Christmas and DH and I still fight over this :silly:

In my house, all the gifts were wrapped. Santa had different paper and none of the gifts were put under the tree until we were asleep on Christmas Eve night. In DH's house, the family gifts were wrapped and put under the tree throughout the whole month of Dec and then Santa's gifts came on Christmas Eve unwrapped. Also, Santa brought the biggest gift.

Our compromise is that Santa gifts are half wrapped and half unwrapped, but Santa never brings the biggest gift. I could say it's because I don't want less fortunate children to feel bad when my kid says Santa bought him a brand new bike, but Santa only brought them an action figure... but really I want some credit, LOL. And I don't want the biggest gift to just be sitting in the living room unwrapped when they walk downstairs, then all the other gifts will be lack luster.

Santa brings one unwrapped gift and unwrapped stockings. Last year it was a balance bike. This year it will be a kitchen for both of them. Otherwise, the kids are getting only a few gifts. At least one will be from mom and dad, the other from their sibling. I don't bother with practical gifts; clothes will come as they need them.

@lilyofthewest: Which of my comments are you replying to? Just confused if I said thing to make you think Santa brings lots of extravagant gifts in our house. Our Santa has a budget - he brings the best gifts (of the gifts the kids get between Santa and Mom & Dad), but they are by no means extravagant or a lot of them! I think I was just trying to explain what Santa gives vs. what Mom & Dad gives, since we do both.

We wrap all. Santa brings a couple fun things and the rest is from us.

1) when my kids go to school they don't need to be getting a lot from santa when some kids didn't. It's not fair for some kids to get a camera, Xbox, toys from santa and some to get a puzzle, for example.

2) that man isn't getting all the credit for my hard thought about gifts! 😅

@Adira: I think a lot of households limit what Santa brings because they know that not all families can afford for "Santa" to bring lots of extravagant gifts. It helps preserve the magic a little better and makes Santa seem like less of a douche if he gets one small special thing for wealthy kids just like for less priviledged kids.

Our parents gave clothes for the most part.

In our house my parents would give us a few gifts on Christmas Eve, and then Santa would bring the majority of gifts on Christmas morning and fill stockings. The stocking gifts were unwrapped and often small or more practical items like a new toothbrush and some candy. The Santa gifts under the tree were toys we had asked for and were always wrapped with the tag saying it was from Santa.

@ShootingStar: In our house, Santa flies around delivering gifts, but we also get gifts for each other. So Santa brings them what they've asked Santa for, and fills the stockings, but I also tell them that at Christmas we buy presents for the people we love. How else to explain why we exchange gifts with other families, etc? I think by the time they're old enough to think "Wait, if other people also get me stuff what's the big deal about Santa?" they're probably starting to think critically about other aspects of Santa, if you know what I mean.
