I think we've finally hit the right balance at 8 months old. They are at 10.5-11 hours overnight and 3-3.5 hrs during the day (2 or 3 naps depending on the day). If they nap substantially more (which they do, occasionally) we are almost always doomed to an early wake up the next morning. If they nap substantially less they might still get 10.5-11 from going to bed to waking for the day, but they will wake a ton during the night (5-7 times for each of them whereas a good night now is 2 each).

It is sort of hit or miss. What I have found is that *usually* if we had a bad night with her up a lot then she has crappy naps throughout the day. So lack of overnight sleep begets lack of subsequent daytime sleep for us.

Which is not to say if she has a stellar night she has stellar day naps, that is sort of hit or miss.

In terms of daytime naps affecting that night's sleep, I find usually she actually falls asleep faster if she didn't nap well and is more tired (like, rolls over and falls asleep in 1 min vs. the 15-20 min of meandering around the crib she's been doing lately). But in terms of overnight wake ups, there is no rhyme or reason.

this did not hold true for my daughter! she always had a certain number of hours she would sleep during a 24 hour period. if she got less than normal, she'd make up for it over the next couple of days. if she got more than normal, she'd cut some of her naps short over the next few days.

A find that a day here and there or a few in a row of crappy naps didn't really make a difference. However, if it was consistently crappy for like a week (ie over the holidays) then it'll start affecting his sleep.

How much time does your 8 month old naps in day and does good naps in day lead to STTN or more night wakings aka crib parties in MOTN?
