We're on the bottom floor of a 3 story apartment building and the stairs to go up are right outside ds's bedroom. But he has ALWAYS been a sound sleeper. I can go in his room at night, and as long as I don't turn on the light, he can sleep through me looking for stuff or getting something out of his closet, lol.

@apis: I think it depends on how tired she is and how deeply she's sleeping. Yesterday we went to a street fair and it was so loud but she slept in her stroller the whole time. But then the quietest little squeak will wake her up. We were mostly worried about this past week because all the expat mommies told me it was going to be crazy loud and LO already has sleep issues. Luckily, even with fireworks right outside her window, she slept.

@apis: well, thankfully we live in a really quiet tree filled neighbourhood, so outside noise is not the issue :). just me making noise from time to time -- so i just need to keep quiet :). he tends to take shorter naps on the weekends when DH is home and we are talking/doing stuff. tiny apt!

hope that your LO gets more used to the outside noise as time goes on! :)

We have a white noise machine and live in the city but our lo sleeps like a rock. One day i was roasting veggies and our smoke alarm went off and was sooooo loud, and she slept through it. I couldnt believe it. So no, sirens are like background noise for her!

@tysonja: good news about the nighttime sleep! Have you found anything helpful to do about keeping him sleeping during naptime?

for us, it's the naps that are easily woken up (granted, we don't have a white noise machine... for some reason my DH thinks it unnatural and doesn't want it for him... i've tried to convince him that most ppl use them, but oh well hahah!), nighttime sleep is good -- nothing seems to wake him up. even when we have lots of company and he sleeps in a room against the wall separating him from our tiny living room. thankful for that!

@mynoahbear: would you say, then, that it's not necessarily the amount of outside noise that wakes her, but rather whether she is sleeping deeply or not? Or is it instead that you can drown out big noise, but that one single creaky floorboard is the enemy?!

We live in Beijing and just went through a week of Chinese New Year fireworks and firecrackers 24/7. We just turned up her air purifier machine and white noise machine and she slept through it. But then small noises like our front door closing or her door creaking will wake her up.

@artbee: white noise seems to be the key.

@JessLC: I think that J is the same way with sharp and startling noises; unfortunately, sometimes that noise is if I laugh too loud or suddenly!

we live in the city so there's a lot of noise! our white noise machine does a good job drowning out most of it though,

@apis: she does. the noise kind of starts off quietly and gets louder as the truck moves past our building and then gradually gets quieter. the noises that wake her up are the really sharp and startling noises. like the microwave door shutting always startles her. maybe the air purifier is too quiet? i used a clock radio for awhile before i got a white noise machine...i turned it to an AM station that had no signal and turned it up pretty loud so it would drown out other noises.

Sometimes shell wake up from a tiny noise and sometimes the lawn lady will be right outside her window and she sleeps through it. Just depends. She has white noise.

@JessLC: we use an air purifier to do double duty as a white noise machine and so we get the benefit from both. But before this particular machine, yes, we did. Do the 6.00am delivery trucks wake L?

We're on the seventh floor of an NYC apartment building and we can hear all the noise and car honking from the streets outside. On a Friday night (like now), or when it's busy outside, sometimes it can bother or wake our LO. Does anyone else have this problem?
