@SweetCaroline- oooo, I'd love to pick your brain. 1. What are the usual 40/week hours? He is planning to work a ton of OT in the begining to pay off our vehicles + the school loan but I'm just wondering for the future. 2. How does health insurance work? Do you they pay for everyone or is it taken out of the paycheck? Obviously our power company could work differently but I'm just curious.

@oldschooolmama: my DH ia a lineman  he gets up in the middle of the night and cheerfully goes to work when called. Right now he works 40 hours/week because of my job and our balance. However, if we ever wanted that to change he could easily double his pay and move to another company or simply take on extra hours at his current employer. Happy to chat more!

ETA: You are right, it is a field that needs lots of people and are willing to pay top dollar to get them.

@SweetCaroline- Funny since he really thought about becoming a CPA but ultimately decided he wants to continue with a manual labor job. I'll just tell you- lineman. Well just getting him out of his toxic environment will improve things greatly. We do think he will enjoy the work though.

So he applied to become a groundsman (entry level) with the local power company but since he doesn't have his CDL and a couple other things it isn't likely he will get picked. So we are forking over the money for the training so that gives him a leg up next go around.

@oldschooolmama: If he's increasing his salary by that much, and is going to be happier doing it, go for it!

My DH works in a highly skilled trade. His ROI on his education/training is much better than mine and I'm a CPA. I'm really curious what field he's looking at. DH loves his job, has been doing it for almost 20 years. Would your DH be happier? That's worth a lot. Any chance someone would hire him and pay for his education if he worked for them for 1-5 years? That is common in DH's industry, and they have fabulous benefits.

@josina- There is a ton of growth and it is a field that will never go away (at least not in our lifetime). We calculated as long as he works 56 hours per week (what he currently works now) then he would almost double his salary. Even as someone who is super beginner.

The only debt we have is our vehicles (his truck is almost paid off, thankfully) and our home.

Worst case- we need to move but these jobs are everywhere.

What does the job market look like for the position he's training for? Is the pay of the new job going to be comparable to his current job?

Its good he has a back-up plan with the truck driving, and $4K isn't much in the grand scheme of things as long as the new job (or trucking job) is going to be able to pay that back. (and you don't already have a bunch of debt).

Personally I would save up the $4k + expenses prior to making the switch. If you already have an emergency fund and some savings to cover expenses while he’s in training then I would go for it!

Backstory- DH has been at his company for a LONG time and should have left a long time ago. He is finally ready to leave but he is our breadwinner.

Anyway, the current plan is for him to quit his job and go back to an 11 week training for a blue collar type job. There is a grant that would cover most of the cost but we would still need to take out a private loan to pay for the rest (slightly over 4k) plus some for our usual expenses.

Part of the program is getting your CDL class A license. So that plan is that if he can't get hired right away in the specific job field then he will get a trucking job in the meantime.

Thoughts?
