At 8 days old, I think you are doing FINE! Getting 0.25 oz after a feed this early on sounds really good to me!! And it sounds like the diapers and weight gain is all good, so I really think you're doing a great job!!! You're such a great, dedicated Mama! <3

My MW said half an ounce a day is great and what they hope to see in the first couple weeks - so it sounds great to me!

I would just keep pumping, just in case. DS#1 had a terrible suck/latch and by the time I became proactive about it my supply was too far gone. Once the tie is fixed, than cut back on the pumping. I doubt your supply is bad right now, but it could get worse.
Good luck! :)

Regarding wet and dirty diapers... are they heavy wet? I did not think I had low supply bc my LO was having 10+ wet/dirty diapers a day... but I didn't realize the difference between wet and heavy wet. Once we realized I DID have low supply and started supplementing her wet diapers felt much different (like you could tell her diaper was wet just picking her up, not having to look at the blue strip) and I realized THAT is what a heavy wet means. Although I don't know if that would be true with a premie.

I would definitely be proactive in seeing the ENT and going to see an LC to sort things out. I trusted my pediatrician when she told me everything was fine, even though I felt like it wasn't, and didn't realize I had a low supply until 3 weeks. I feel like in your first few weeks you still have a great chance of getting your supply up if it is low.

All those wet diapers and weight gain? I'd say you're doing great mama. Keep eating lots, drinking lots, and pumping after feeds. Your body will catch up.

@MamaMoose: I don't, but I did breast feed my first son until three or four months ago....so maybe it's just that they are already in their breastfeeding size, so I don't notice a change as much?

@Greentea: thanks, I need a hug!

@Applesandbananas: I did yesterday...it was an ounce. It wasn't a great feed...but it wasn't abnormal for us. I don't know how much a preemie should be drinking at a time?

@T.H.O.U.: thanks! I am going to try and keep up the pumping. I am just kicking myself for not doing it earlier. I didn't want to prolong the engorgement, but now I am worried I should have.

It sounds good!

But I would consider keeping with the pumping to help the supply. Not that it sounds low but you don't want it to drop.

@jedeve: aw jedeve, hugs. That sounds really stressful. If it were me, I would just keep pumping after nursing and do my (your) best to not stress too much (I know, pretty tough not to!) LO was the sleepiest nurser (but didn't sleep the rest of the time!) so I know how stressful it can be. Wish I could be more help!

With that kind of pee and poop output I wouldn't worry a bit!! Do you have large breasts? I have big boobs and I was honestly never engorged except the day my milk came in, but I had plenty of supply and and never had to supplement. I would just be sure to nurse at least every three hours to keep up the demand but it sounds like your son is doing great!!

I'm kinda freaking out about my supply. Help calm me down!

I had great supply right after LO was born. All the nurses talked about how they've never seen someone make so much colostrum. (I had to hand pump to give LO extra because his blood sugar was so low.) My milk came in right away and I was engorged for a few days.

Then the enforcement went away and my breasts feel super soft. They don't get hard between feedings like they did with my first. LO is a super sleepy preemie and doesn't have a very strong suck and doesn't stay awake very long to nurse. I don't leak anymore.

He does get plenty of wet and dirty diapers (11 of each yesterday, I think.) he is gaining about .5 oz a day. He's 8 days old.

The LC thinks he might have a rear tongue tie, although the pediatrician doesn't. We are taking him to an ent doc Thursday.

The LC wanted me to pump after each feed and supplement at the breast. He is hardly taking anything from the sns. I think I'm doing something wrong with it. I'm pumping mostly around .25 oz a time, but did get almost 2 last night.

DH says as long as he is gaining and has plenty of diapers, I don't have low supply. But I am so worried I've already ruined it by not pumping when my milk first came in. It seems like no one ever really recovers from low supply. I know they say if takes 6-8 weeks to regulate supply, but I'm worried it's already too late.

Should I be worried? Can I recover my supply? Is it even low? If he gets the tongue tie fixed, would my supply come back up?
