@SweetiePie: Ahh! Crazy! But that worked out for you since you didn't want to move to 1 nap anyway! I'm gonna have to start cutting off naps if I want to keep 2 nap schedule.. Some nights DD doesn't sleep till 9-9:30 b/c she likes having long wake times

@snowjewelz: he totally faked me out! We tried going to one nap gradually and it just wasn't working. So we gave him more awake time between naps and shifted bedtime about 45 mins later and we are back in nap heaven! Today he napped 9am - almost 11. Then 2:15-3:45. It sorta makes me wonder if that's not true for a lot of babies in the 12-15 month range and people mistake it for 1 nap readiness? (Not all! But some. Because I really was sure!)
I soon read after starting this thread to hang on to 2 naps as long as you can (from a baby sleep site) so I tried new adjustments to wake time and found that 2-3.5-3.5/4 is perfect! So all we did was add an extra 1-1.5 HR wake time between first and 2nd nap. Golden!

@gingerbebe: @Grace: This is what I was thinking. I can keep shortening the AM nap little by little. Even if it's over a month or so. So eventually it'll be phased out and I can move the afternoon earlier and earlier. My dream is to have a 12-3 nap :-)

@daniellemybelle: This is so good to hear! I'm glad that someone else who was afraid of 1 nap actually loves it. I'm hoping that's me in a few months! It does have a lot of upside!

@SweetiePie: Whoohoo! I'd say keep it how it is if it works and if that's what you want. And by you limiting the morning nap you are starting the 2-1 nap transition. You can go slow. It doesn't have to be all done in a week.

Yes, sounds like it. We just went for it and committed. Some days she was cranky until nap time but we just stick to the one nap every day at about 11:30/12. Once her one nap lengthened which happened pretty quickly, she could have her regular 7:30 bedtime.

I was like you and didn't want to give up the two naps per day - I felt like we both needed it. But I actually LOVE her one nap per day. She takes a long nap (knock on wood it stays that way) and I prefer the long chunk of time to myself.

@Grace: @jape14: @gingerbebe: Ok, here's how today has gone so far.
9am - nap. I woke him at 10am on the dot.
1:30pm - nap. He seemed like he needed it. So 3.5 hours wake time and he fell asleep within 5 mins!

So maybe that's the issue after all. Morning nap was too long? Does it still make sense to keep the morning nap to an hour and preserve the 2nd nap? Or should I just bite the bullet and start the 1 nap transition? I'm normally VERY big on letting him dictate sleep. But I wonder if I'm just setting up a new weird schedule. Should I just decrease the morning nap by 15 mins every week until it's gone and the PM nap remains?

@jape14: @Grace: Thanks! I think that tomorrow I'll try the same 9am nap (since that has been largely unaffected) but I'll do the PM nap 4 hours from wakeup - so around 2:30 since that is when he fell asleep today and that did happen last week before his stretch of no naps. So maybe I do just need to adjust the wake times after all?
He's always been on the shorter side of wake-times (he couldn't do more than 1.5 hours awake until like 6 months) so the 2/2.5-2.5/3-4 has worked well for a long time and I guess he's just growing out of that finally! I'll give the adjustment a week or so and if he still won't take good naps I'll resign to a single nap :-)

Thanks for joining me on this roller-coaster!

@SweetiePie: I did it differently, in that it was more clock based as she got closer to 1. I think naps were at 10 and 2 (with a 7 AM wake time), but I do remember as she got older we had to increase the wake time. It didn't stay the same from 6 mo (when she went to 2 naps) until 14 mo (when she dropped to 1 nap). So it makes sense that you are having to change things. And it sounds like he napped today, so you are on the right track!

@SweetiePie: We were on a solid 2-3-4 for ages and now it's more like 3-3.5-4 (depends on nap lengths). I would probably push the first nap to a 3-hour wake time and then the second one should settle around the 3-3.5 mark, too. Here was what DS did yesterday as an example:
6:30 - wake
9:30-11 - first nap
noon - lunch
2:15-3 - second nap
5:45 - dinner
6:15 - bath
6:45 - milk
7pm - bed

@Grace: we've been doing roughly a 2-3-4 schedule. so far he's done really well with this schedule:

6:30/7 - wake for day
9am-10:30/11 - 1st nap
12:15 - lunch
1/1:30 - 2:30/3 - 2nd nap
3pm - snack
5:15pm - dinner
6/6:30 - bath
6:30/7 - bed

Of course there are some variances because I always base the next nap/bedtime on previous wake time. And sometimes naps are 1.5 hours and sometimes 2. So if the day was off a little and his 2nd nap ended at 2pm, I'd bump up dinner and bed so that he was in bed by 6pm. He still wakes at 6:30/7 every day no matter when I put him down. We've been on 2 naps since about 8 months I'd say and it's been perfect. That's why now I feel so scattered because really since 3 months he's been on a fantastic and predictable schedule (3 naps then 2). I don't remember the transition from 3 to 2 being so hairy!

@SweetiePie: Have you seen this chart? It says on average the wake time on 2 naps is 3-4 hours. I wouldn't be afraid of keeping him awake closer to the 4 hr mark, if that's how long he wants to stay awake. https://docs.google.com/document/d/11GHo4keUb2TVJUlSL1kD6HQcEgaNFBmzoQoOzcpcyas/mobilebasic?authkey=CPXE1bsO&pli=1&hl=en

What is the schedule you've had him on so far? I'm getting confused.

@SweetiePie: Yeah, you could wake him after an hour and keep the regular bedtime and see how bedtime goes. But if he's able to stay up for 4 hours, you might be able to push him until 1030am, give him a snack to kill a little time and keep him sated until a late lunch, and hope to have him passed out by 11am. If he sleeps 2-2.5 hours, then he can have a late lunch around 1:30pm and he might be able to go to 6pm and just go to bed a little earlier.

@gingerbebe: Thanks! It looks like he might have finally gone down a few mins ago. In your opinion should I wake him after an hour or so so that bedtime isn't impacted? Or let him sleep as much as he needs and push back bedtime?

Why do I feel like such a newbie all of the sudden?! Things have been predictable for so many months (almost a year!) and now I feel clueless again.

Its okay - if he still wont sleep after a 1 hour nap, then cut it down to 45 minutes but leave it at the normal nap time (9am). It takes some tweaking, but your intuition is right in that he needs SOME rest in the afternoon.

@Grace: @jape14: @gingerbebe: Ok just put him down at 1:45, exactly 3 hours after last wakeup. We were doing more like 2.5 hours after a 1.5-2 hour AM nap. So hopefully the shorter nap and longer wake time will mean he gets at least a small nap this afternoon to take us to bedtime without drama. The being awake from 10:30/11 till 6pm bedtime has been brutal! I've always thought any nap under an hour was way too short, but today I'll take a 45 min catnap happily! And then I'll keep working on merging the two into one.

Thanks to you ladies and everyone else who has weighed in. His sleep gives me major anxiety so it helps getting advice and reassurance!

@SweetiePie: We've had pretty good luck recently pushing the second nap for a 3.5 hr wake time. His second nap tends to be shorter so it hasn't messed with bedtime, either. I totally feel you on the classes - we missed a few 11am music classes in the past month or so when he started stretching his first wake time from 2 to 3ish hours.

Good luck this afternoon!

@Grace: yes! That's what I'll do. I'm going to leave it at 1:30 or so and see how he does. He actually slept for an hour and some odd minutes because I had to finish drying my hair! And I hate waking him! But he's chipper! He cried when I first woke him and was disoriented. But after a book and a diaper change he's actually really happy.
Now we're out for some fresh air and I'll take him to the park for a little bit. Come back, lunch, runaround and then nap. I ended up skipping his 11 AM class because I was nervous about waking him up before he was ready and then making him go to a class. And it would've been tight to get there.
With the changes now happening for his naps I'm sort of wondering if I made a mistake by signing him up for another semester of 11 AM classes :-( Maybe if it doesn't work out well with his naps I can get them to change our timeslot.

@SweetiePie: I'd also say 10:30 for wakeup. But I'd be inclined to leave the afternoon nap at the regular time. Since he hasn't been tired enough to nap before, if you push it up, he might still not be tired. See if you can read his sleepy signs to see if he's tired earlier.

My almost 12 month old only did 1 nap yesterday! We're now in the limbo of sometimes she needs 1, sometimes she needs 2. Honestly, she can go 4-5 hrs between naps so she can prob drop to 1 nap already, but the length of naps are still all over the place, so I foresee we'll just be doing "what works" till closer to 15 months!

Plus. I already made her bday party this week 12-2, so I have to force her to take an earlier morning nap!

@Grace: @gingerbebe: Ok, I put him down for his nap this AM at 9:15 and he fell asleep at about 9:30. Usually I put him in at 9 and he falls asleep pretty quickly, within 10 mins.
When should I wake him up? 10:30? If I left him he'd sleep till at least 11. BUT, 10:30 is a normal wake time for him when I put him in at 9. So he still may not be tired for an afternoon nap. Get him up at 10?

@jape14: gahhh this makes sense too. I think tomorrow I'll see how shortening the AM nap works because in theory that does seem easier. But...just because it sounds easier doesn't mean it will be I guess. Isn't that a theme when we become moms? Haha.
I'll let you know how it goes :-)

@Grace: Your method sounds similar to @gingerbebe, I like it! I think tomorrow I'll try for a short AM nap. He has a class from 11-11:45 so we'll be cutting it close to do class, lunch and nap by 12/12:30. But It could work!

@SweetiePie: That explanation for the morning nap totally makes sense, especially with an early riser (I have one too)! I'm right there with you with our nanny! She has been saying that for at least a month now but he napped great the whole Thanksgiving break. I'm just trying to ride out the holidays :)

I think pushing the morning nap back by 15-20 minutes every couple of days sounds like a great plan. DS usually gets up by 6:30 and we've had pretty good luck pushing the first nap to 3-3.5 hours, so if I were you, I'd start the first nap at 10 and then push gradually to 10:15, 10:30, etc until you get to that 12-1pm sweet spot.

@SweetiePie: I don't blame you for hanging on! I'll be hanging on this time too. DS1 didn't nap more than 1.5 hours on one nap until he was 2.5....and then he gave up his nap at 3 😭. Not every kid takes a 3 hour afternoon nap and I don't want to find out that DS2 is the same way!
