Yes, when we were renting I just wasn't as motivated. Sure, we kept things clean, but nothing more than that. Now that I own my home, and there are features I actually like about it, I try to do a lot more. Except the outside still needs work - but that is for next summer when I'm not very pregnant or at home with a newborn.

I feel much more relaxed and creative now that we live in a house. Even though I hated our last landlord, I also felt better and more motivated living in our last house, which was rented. When I lived in apartments, my motivation to decorate was hindered by the fact that I was renting, and the constant noise and living on top of people really had an impact, which I'm only now realizing now that you posed that question!

@Arden: ditto!! Our apartment now is super bright and sunny and it motivates me so much more to do stuff around the house, versus vegging out on the couch.

It absolutely does! It kind of goes both ways for me, though. When we were house hunting, we coudn't afford a single family home in our current area so we decided to move a bit further away (closer to DH's family) this added a pretty long commute (45min-1 hr) BUT our home is so lovely! I couldn't be more in love with it. It's really made us so happy to come home every day. TONS of natural light but still private and it's a great space for our future growing family!

Definitely! We remodeled a good portion of our house last winter, and I seem to enjoy cleaning and keeping up the house now. I think it even affected DH too. He kept up on the yardwork and stuff much better this year! And ditto on the light/depression thing. I have a history of depression also, and winters here are pretty drab for the most part, and I've noticed it affects my mood quite a bit. I try to let as much natural light into our home as possible!

Light. Yes, totally. If I don't have good natural light, it affects me a lot.

@BoogieBea: It totally does!! I have a history of depression and light/weather REALLY affects it. I think living in our previous house was one of my darkest years in the last several years. Now I am living in pure sunlight and I just feel so... content.

Lighting was very important to us while house hunting especially because we get minimal sunlight during the winter months. I like the house to have a lot of natural light and have a very open design on the main floor. I work at home and I used to work in our bedroom which we keep darker. I would get nothing done but now I'm working downstairs again where there's more light. What a difference it makes.

Maybe this is a totally weird question... but for me it totally does!!

We just moved and I really didn't like our last place. There were elements I liked about it - like the 2.5 bathrooms, the master bath with big spa tub and double sinks - but there were zoo many things I hated. Like - the first floor had one window in the living room, and the kitchen was behind the garage so it was so dark. I hated it. I hated having no natural light. Even if I opened the window, I could see my neighbors or they could see me. It was such close quarters. Anyway - it really affected my motivation to clean or get things done because I didn't like where I lived.

I love our new apartment so much more! There are drawbacks (tiny bathroom=no spa tub or double sinks! lol) but one wall is all windows overlooking a park, and a glass door leading to balcony. It's so great. It makes me so much happier and cheerful in doing chores!

How about you? How much does your living situation affect your day to day life?
