@Mrs. Jump Rope: Interesting that your OB wouldn't give you the tdap when it was just a cold!

@Arden: I didn't ask for her source and now I'm kicking myself that I didn't. She honestly didn't seem incredibly knowledgable about much. I also was seeking a referral for my DD's lip tie as it has made some aspects of BF hard and she shined her flashlight into her mouth and never even checked her (prominent, grade 3) lip tie! I had to show her what a lip tie even was. DH and I are strongly considering finding a new office after this visit because I don't want to risk getting stuck with her in a true emergency!

@mrs. bird: I wondered that, too. It's a great question.

@travelgirl1: That's just common sense right there - even if there isn't anything medically indicated for giving a shot while a child is sick!

@blackbird: I SAH right now, so it's not too much of a hassle for me personally at this time!

Well, glad to see I was right to stick to my guns about this. I was fairly sure that's what I had heard from others about their peds' policies.

I wish they all would, last I looked at the cdc website it depended on the vaccine. I took a child in for vaccines and she was at the tail end of an illness and then ended up super miserable for a few days afterwards since they didn't delay it (even though I asked about it.) It is tricky if for no other reason than you don't know if it would have happened anyway or if the illness is making them miserable etc. in the future I will always postpone if they are sick but thankfully I have a schedule flexible enough to accommodate that decision.

Well, the CDC says children with "minor illnesses" like a cold can be vaccinated (or at least with DTAP, not sure about others) but I can totally see the point of view @travelgirl1 mentioned. If a kid already feels crappy, sticking them with needles won't really be a comfort. But in terms of whether it's bad health wise, as long as a vaccine isn't a live vaccine I'm not really sure why it would make a difference?

Our doc reschedules, she says she doesn't like giving them to a sick baby because jabs can make them feel grotty and if they are already feeling rough it just isn't pleasant for them.

@coopsmama: just curious, if they want to vaccinate & the child already is ill, how do they differentiate between an adverse reaction to the vaccine and the illness?

Absolutely. Where's the info saying that's outdated, because I certainly haven't heard of it?
I would never, ever, vaccinate a child with a compromised immune system. But my ped would never do it anyway.

At our last pediatrician, it depended on the vax. I can't remember what she said, but she gave whatever vax he was due for because it wouldn't "interact," but if it were another vax she would have held it. I wish I coudl remember what she said! He was also 15 months, so I don't knwo if age might make a difference, too.

How old is that information?

My OB wouldn't give me the tdap vaccine because I had a cold this past summer.

Chloe's ped rescheduled vaccines when she was sick, though I don't recall the last time she was vaccinated. 18 months? 24? She's almost three so it's been awhile for us!

M had a 2 month well child visit today and ironically enough, she woke up in the night with her first fever and has been sick with the sniffles as well this morning. The nurse came in and said they wouldn't be doing vaccines due to her illness and to reschedule when she's better but a new care provider (our regular nurse practitioner was on vacation today) came in and said that it is old information not to vaccinate while a child has a fever. We postponed anyway.

But now I'm curious what other care providers are recommending regarding vaccines when a child sick. What has been your experience?
