LO is 13 months old and loves playing with his books, not necessarily being held and having them read to him yet. He will allow one or two quick books before bedtime but that's about it. Otherwise, he's squirmy and not that interested.

You're doing the best thing by having the books around, just in case he wants them.

I think like when she started walking and could sign slash babble she would walk and get a book and bring it saying boo boo (book). I would sit to read and in a few seconds she would be up again. That was provable around 14 months. Then suddenly she wanted to actually see and touch the books. It helped if I didn't just read the words but had a conversation with her about the book. Like point to the monkey. Do you see he's eating a banana like you?

DS would sit patiently starting around 10 months and I could read 2-3 before he started to get restless.

My 12 mo old is the same way... she is such an explorer and really doesn't keep interest in anything for too long. Hopefully she will start showing interest soon...

LO wasn't interested for a while, then he started turning the pages on his own at about 7 months and I think that's where he got hooked. We started with flap books and he still loves them. He now brings books to me several times a day in addition to the sleep routine books, I would guess I read at least 15 books a day, or at least the same 2 or 3 he's obsessed with 15 times. I keep the story story books in his room for reading before sleep but the flap books and those 100 first words books in his play area so he can flip through them on his own. We got a Hello magazine subscription for his birthday, it's Highlights magazine for babies and he absolutely loves them so maybe try those? I also let him flip through any mail catalogs he's interested in.

@edelweiss: I wouldn't sweat it! The only other thing I can think of that we do purposefully, is I read around him. So, he sees me reading and will often go get his books to read too. I wouldn't sweat it though! My Mom said I wasn't interested until I was 3 and I'm a voracious reader now

@hilsy85: aw, that is so cute that he brings you the books! from what i'm hearing, i think that LO just isn't that interested right now. we have different types of books, read to him everyday and they're available to him in every room, but they're just not appealing to him right now. oh well!

@cmomma17: yeah, we went through a heavy chewing phase, then a short smack-the-hand-on-the-book-so-i-can't-turn-the-page phase, and now we're in willful ignorance phase.

@scg00387: i got him some touch and feel books and they seemed to work for a week, but then he was so over it! we have books in every room and have read to him several times a day since he was born--maybe we're pushing it too much and he's already showing a rebellious side, ha! who knows.

@keiki_mama: thanks, that gives me some hope that things might turn around!

Around 12/13 months, he started bringing me books that he wanted me to read, and shortly after that he started crawling into my lap after he gave them to me. It is the cutest! I will say he's the most focused at night, after I nurse him, when DH reads him his bedtime story. I guess he's full and sleepy?

Also like @scg00387: we have books everywhere in the apt at his level and one of his fave games for a while is just to pull them all out and flip through them.

LO didn't really start paying attention to books until he was 16 months or so. Now he's a reading maniac!!

Do you have any flap or touch n feel books? We play with those during the day and read here and there, and when bedtime rolls around he is locked into sitting in DHs lap. If he wiggles around and isn't interested in reading I nurse him and he's in bed. So he's figured out that bedtime reading is better than bed :) but he loves reading during the day, has lots of books at a height he can reach. And they're in every room of the house that we play.

I had such dreams of reading to my children .... before I had a baby!
LO is only 8 months, but still! He likes to chew on books sometimes, smack them out of my hands sometimes, but yeah, no. We don't read much because he's not into it! He'd rather put random stuff in his mouth.

when did your LO start taking a real interest in the books you read to him/her? as in, sit still and look at the pages (or at least a few)? my LO is 11 months and looks at a book for 1 hot second before going to play with something else. our bedtime book routine is me trying to follow him with the book in my hands in case he happens to glance in my general direction, or just sitting there reading out loud to my pugs while LO goes off to chew on the white noise machine.

i don't know if it's an age thing (i know he can't sit still for long), if LO just isn't that into books.
