Ugh, yes! LO is 4.5 and begs to be carried at all times. She walks very short distances before the whining, complaining and begging begins. We are at Disney World and LO was pissed when I told her I didn't bring the Tula carrier for her. I figured (wrongly) she was old enough to mostly walk. Omg after 2 days of hauling her around the parks my hip legit feels like it's about to pop out of the socket and my arms are like jello. Is this what doing cross fit is like? :silly:

I'm interested to see that this is so common! DD will be 4 in March and is so whiny about walking and immediately says that she's tired.

Before it was frigid out, we'd do a couple mile long walks at parks every Saturday and Sunday as a family. It's a good way to stay active (especially while pregnant), and enjoy the outdoors. We always brought the stroller and told my son he had the option to ride or walk, and he would whine and complain every.single.weekend. He's probably thrilled it's too cold to go walking now.
We did talk about being healthy and how good walking is for our heart and he was more receptive to that. But yeah, I feel ya there! I'm not willing to give up my weekend walks because he's a butt about walking. He can learn to deal :) haha.

There was one time he actually just plopped down on the side of the walk with crossed arms and legs and sulked, " I HATE walking."
It was so pathetic we couldn't stop laughing. We kept walking and he eventually joined us again.

My 4yo is constantly whining that she's too tired. Walking to school is a chore.

My older one is fine with walking. He got kicked out of the stroller at 3 when DD arrived and got booted off of the stroller roller board at 5. Luckily, he never complains (and we've gone out walking 7-8 miles before, just around the city), I tell him he has good city legs. My 3yo loves to walk but does get tired after maybe a mile, so we still have the stroller for her.

We live 5 blocks away from my daughter's kindergarten, and she griped about the walk at first. Now she's fine with it.

Yes, my kid whines so much I'd started wondering if he has a legit problem with his legs. I mean, how can you be so tired the minute you walk out the door? I'm glad to see he's not the only one.

@Freckles: Totally agree on not wanting to always have an incentive. What I meant was that making special trips once or twice might make a more positive association for her, as would asking her her walk places that she likes to go (i.e., storytime at the library) as opposed to places she doesn't want to go anyway (i.e., your dentist appointment). At least with my child, she's more likely to comply if she realizes that walking is the only way she's going to get to go where she wants to go - and it's not necessarily an "extra" incentive like a treat, just something we plan to do anyway, like a playdate/activity, but I could live with skipping to prove a point.

Hope I explained my thoughts a little better this time!

Mine's okay with walking in general. I'm surprised that he isn't more into the stroller since his little brother still uses it. At the mall, we found the kid push cart thing useful instead of the stroller.

Is it mostly when it's cold? I make my 4 yo walk to and from school and he's fine except when it's cold or windy. On those days I let him go in the stroller and either wear the baby or carry the 2 year old part of the way and everyone is much happier!

@misolee: Yes, mine definitely complains more when her brother is in the stroller. But now that he walks well, i will either make both of them walk or put both in the stroller. Not worth hearing the whining!

@PinkElephant: The thing is that i know she can walk 1km with no issues, but i don't want to always have an incentive for her to walk. It quickly turns into a "so what do i get if i walk?"

@sunny: @JennyD: i'm glad to know mine isn't the only whiner!

So far we've had two whine-free days!! I now just prepare her by saying if i hear any complaining about having to walk to the train station, she doesn't get her tv show after camp. Of course it's the last day of camp where she realized that it's only one train stop and much faster than driving. :meh:

My LO is the same. She's nearly 4.5 and always complains about being "too tired" to walk short distances (like 5 min to go home from the park). When I take her to the mall I need to push her in the stroller because she refuses to walk. :-/

My LO was 3.5 years old when little Bro arrived. Before that, she rarely rode in the stroller and enjoyed walking. Now, at 4 years old, she is Soo whiny about walking. I think it's more of I see little Bro in stroller, why can't I be in one kinda thing but still.

Yea. No advice. Just wondering what to do myself.

I hated strollers so I made mine walk a lot from an early age. We frequently walk from my work to her daycare (~1km). We do a lot of hiking so it's always been my goal to have her hike with us, at a reasonable pace. That said, mine still whines sometimes.

I suggest requiring them to walk more often - at the grocery store, to the park, short outings.

No tips, just commiseration. We just left the city, and DD1 (4.5) was still regularly taking the buggy board and whining about wanting to ride in the stroller.

Can you start by walking short distances to things he's excited about? For example, to get a treat at a bakery or ride the mechanical horse outside the grocery store? This helped a little with DD. She was willing to walk about 3-4 blocks to school b/c she was excited about it and knew that was the only way I'd take her.

My DD is 4.5 and hates to walk. We live only 5 minutes away from the train station (2 minutes if you're an adult walking) but she will whine and groan the entire way. 5 minutes feels like 100 hours :meh: . DS is 2 yet is fine with these short 5-10 minute walks.

She wants to just be pushed around in a stroller or take the car. At this age, i think she can deal with 5-10 minutes of walking!

Any tips on how to deal with these situations?
