@lady baltimore: We have the kid V-Tech one, my daughter got it for her second birthday. She loves it, plays with it all the time still almost a year later. My nieces (5 and 8) love to play with it too so I think it's a great camera. I probably wouldn't do a real one for a 5 year old.

we have the v-tech and the image quality is really really poor.

so i'm buying a waterproof/drop-proof camera for a trip, and i'll let charlie use it. (he's 6)

@lady baltimore: My DD has this camera. She got it when she was 5. She actually really likes it. It takes terrible pictures but it's fine for kids. She takes pictures with it and then use the camera to apply silly frames and faces to it. The camera also has games on it, and she plays with those sometimes. She's almost 7 now and still plays with it.

@avivoca: Good point about not wanting my SiL and BiL to feel badly if it gets busted. Niece is pretty careful (I let her use my Canon Rebel when we visit), but she does have a baby brother and a rambunctious dog in the house.

@Hoots: Interesting. I was mostly thinking about the picture quality being much better with a "real" camera, but I hadn't looked too much at the durability comparison between the two.

I am leaning toward the more toy-like camera (something like this: http://www.amazon.com/VTech-Kidizoom-Connect-Frustration-Packaging/dp/B00D4K8XJ8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437493303&sr=8-1&keywords=camera+for+kids). It seems to make more sense with the others in the house, and it's a less major investment if she loves it for a week and then never plays with it again.

I am going to check with SiL, mostly just to make sure that she doesn't have one already.

We got my nephew, who is 6, the drop- and water-resistant camera for Christmas. We asked his parents beforehand and got the okay. DH did a lot of research and picked one that was really durable. We also got it used on ebay as we didn't want to spend a lot on money on a new one if he was only semi-interested. The camera is still going 6 months and several large oops later. We actually didn't go with the toy camera because we read they weren't as durable and we figured it was worth the extra $20 to get the used rough and tough version.

Depending on how careful/klutzy she is, I would definitely consider it. My son will be 5 on his next birthday and we've talked about getting him a real camera. I would probably opt for one designed for a kid though.

At 5 years old, I would definitely opt for a kid-specific camera, and one that is not expensive. You are a nice aunt! :)

My experience is with my niece, but imho, five is too young to have a camera. My niece was not careful at all at that age and I would have been devastated if she had broken a real camera by treating it as a toy. Have you asked her parents if it's okay?

My niece loves using my camera whenever we visit, so for her birthday, we want to get her one of her own, that she can use to take real pictures. I can't decide between getting something more toy-like, like a VTech KidZoom, or springing for something like a Nikon Coolpix, which is still drop- and water-resistant, but is more of a real camera. Any recommendations?
