@Mrs. Jump Rope: hahaha my daughter would've said the same thing! I love it when they respond to a rhetorical question literally. Hilarious!

Oh yes! We nicknamed our daughter our future CEO because she is so strong-willed, determined, spunky, and opinionated. Such a firecracker! She talks all.the.day.long and she likes to "correct" us. She'll ask, "what is that mommy?" but she's not really asking because she already has an answer in her mind. If I say something differently, she'll be like, "no no no Mommy, that is not a bus that is a firetruck.". I just look at her, nod my head, and go, "oh ok".....

She insists on cleaning up her own messes, washing her own hands, picking up her own things. She's fiercely independent, super fiery, and I love the girl to death. She gives me a headaches sometimes but it's stinkin' hilarious too.

She is totally going to be bossing her chill, easygoing, lil' bro around. Poor guy. I can already see it now...

@Corduroy: when my LO was that age she used to SCREAM when floaters came in her room and then would always take a monster nap because she didn't want to have to interact with strangers! Her teachers found it hysterical. But now at nine months she's outgrown it. She still ignores people she doesn't know but at least she doesn't scream!

@rachiecakes: Yes yes yes to all of this!

My 13 month old boy does what he wants, when he wants. We walk outside a lot, he wants to try to walk into the street. Refuses to listen to me (though he acknowledges me). Yanks his hand away when I try to turn him around and if I hold tight enough to not let him squirm away he plants his feet, and if that doesn't work sits down in the middle of wherever we are and screams. When I then pick him up to bring him to another part of the complex he will twist and flail and try to launch himself out of my arms. And he's a *really* strong kid. No matter where I set him down he automatically beelines for the road. Oy.

He's fearless, too. He's fearless and stubborn. A few weekends ago we went to the Ren Faire. During the final joust DH was holding him, and he flailed himself hard enough that DH put him down so he could walk around (we were sitting in the very back row) Instead of walking around in the grass near us he immediately took off down an aisle to the "stage" (which was down an incline) and had almost reached the fence (which I'm sure he would have gone under) by the time DH caught up with him. FAST, stubborn and fearless :) And it's not as if the actors were just standing around, there was a joust going on! And at least a thousand people there!

We're trying to console ourselves by telling each other that we'd rather him be fiercely independent with a strong sense of what he wants and a solid backbone. I'm not worried about someone pushing him around or making him do something he doesn't want to do (because even as a toddler--it's an actual struggle), but I do sort of wish he'd give a little...to me and DH, anyway ;)

Daycare says LO is territorial and tries to control which parents teachers come in the room. She either greets them enthusiastically or not so gently tells them to get out with a scream. This started at 5 months so I can only imagine where we are headed.

Today she pulled apart our baby gate gorilla style. It's straight up in pieces. "ARE YOU INSANE?!" slipped out of my mouth. I instantly felt awful.

lol this thread is hilarious. It'll be fun seeing what kind of personality E develops. As of right now (5 months old), she is very happy-go-lucky and go with the flow. But she's feisty. Kicks and moves and never lost her standing/walking reflex. I just thought it was normal, but it's not because everyone constantly comments on it. So she's going to be active, that's for sure.

And the first thing I thought was "that's awesome." So it's really hard because I'm secretly proud of his shenanigans because they're so clever (and funny), but I'm torn because I think I'm also supposed to teach him to be a little less wild than he is naturally.

@BananaPancakes: we had her preschool orientation yesterday. It was in this huge room with tons of toys & books, so the kids could play and get to know their teachers while the parents talked to the director.

So what's my kid do? Stack toys so she can climb out the window of the play house. I'm like HORRIFIED. and then some other little girl is all like "woo! I want to try!" and a teacher is scolding Chloe & I'm like "crap, can you be expelled from preschool?"

Why does MY kid have to be the monkey? What made we think climbing through a window was a good idea? She couldn't play dress up? Or cars with the other kids?

This is going to be a long year.

Honestly, it scares me that his personality is so strong in the "BOY" sense. Everyone comments about how he is seriously like a mini lumberjack...just straight up manly. I was hoping for a bit of a Renaissance man, but I'm pretty sure we ended up with a caveman.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: My younger brother used to do the uber-dramatic tantrum as a toddler. My mom and I still laugh so hard about how he used to peek behind himself, to make sure there were no any toys/objects in his path and then throw himself back and tantrum like it was the end of the world! haha

@MamaMoose: LO uses the word "no" to mean exactly what you said: "I want to do it myself!". She is recently obsessed with putting her own lotion on after her bath, but can't quite press down the lotion bottle herself yet, so I take her hand to show her how to do it - oh.my.word. Full on shriek and "no no no no no mama!!!!!" then sets her hand on top of the lotion and looks at me, like "ok, show me now". Talk about a control freak! ;-)

@yoursilverlining: Ditto on trying to read books. If my LO had the capability to say "I want to do it MYSELF" I think that's the only phrase I would hear all day.
