@Mrs. Bee: I always think of Charlie's sleep progression when I am down about the 10 hrs of overnight sleep!

Low... LO sleeps about 10 hours a night and takes 2 naps about an hour each.

Low! Mine sleeps about the same as yours. My husband is someone who seems to need less sleep than most people, so I just assumed she was like him. She sleeps about 10 hours over night, and 1-3 hours during the day. Whenever I see people agonizing over how much their babies are 'supposed' to be sleeping I always wonder why.

I guess she has high sleep needs. She generally sleeps 6:00pm-7:45am (today it was 8:30am) and then she takes three naps a day usually (usually two 45 minute naps and one that's 1-2 hours).

I think she has low-average sleep needs. They're getting more average as time goes on.

@Mrs. Bee: This makes me feel so good to hear. For us, 9-10 hours is awesome compared to some of the recent wakeup drama we've had. So, consolidating the naps actually helped your LO sleep longer at night. So good to know.

@winniebee: don't worry... your lo may sleep more as he gets older. charlie only slept 10 hours at night for a very long time, but he obviously needed more night time sleep because he'd go down for his first nap after not being up that long, and he could take monster naps. eventually when he dropped to one nap, he actually got more sleep 11-12 hours at night plus 3+ hours of naps in the day.

On good nights, my LO sleeps about 9-10 hours with a couple of wakeups. He averages about 2-3 hours of sleep in naps, more on the weekends since we push the 1.5 awake time closely. I'd say that we're on the low end. I'm hoping that he jumps up to more in the future. He's a little over 5 months old.

I didn't vot because I think DD has higher sleep needs and DS has lowerd sleep needs. As a newborn, I felt so bad for DS because I thought I was severly failing in getting him enough sleep, but he just doesn't need as much sleep as his sister! The most he has ever slept overnight was 11 hours, but his usual is 10; his daytime naps usually total about 3.

ETA: in comparison, DD was sleeping about 15-16 hours a day at his age. She's 2.5 and she still does 13-14 hours total a day!

@Sammyfab: It's usually 12.5 or 13! I guess I'm looking at "average" as the sleep / wake chart commonly posted on Hellobee.

I think average...he sleeps 11-12 hours overnight (with one feeding), and takes naps that are very average for his age (right now he's in that annoying cat nap stage!).

LO sleeps about 10 hrs at night, and takes an average of 3 hrs worth of naps during the day. He wakes up happy, so as long as he's not crying, I don't feel the need to force him to sleep!

I think your LO has fairly average sleep needs if he sleeps 13.5 hours a day!

My LO is pretty bang on average although I wouldn't consider 12 hours overnight to be average/common. When I consider the total amount of sleep my LO gets over 24 hours he is average (so he may sleep more at night and take shorter naps or vice versa). I do actively manage his sleep though so I'll wake him to maintain a certain schedule because he needs a certain amount of awake time to sleep well.

Does your child have low, average, or high sleep needs?

I thought I was doing something wrong for a long time, but finally came to terms with the fact that my son has low sleep needs. Lucky me!

The sleep charts and sleep books don't apply to us. My son sleeps 10-10.5 hours overnight and takes about 3 hours worth of naps during the day (sometimes 2.5). I followed Weissbluth almost to a T, except that we've never eliminated night feedings since my son generally sleeps through the night unless sick. He's 8.5 months and he's been this way for a long time.

I consider low sleep needs something like my son, average sleep needs 12 hours plus naps, high sleep needs sleeping more than 12 hours overnight plus naps.
