They all have runny noses this time of year so I don't expect him to be squeaky clean when I arrive. I would not like to see evidence of lunch on his face plus old snot and eye gunk at 6pm but if it's a couple of hours worth I'm okay with it. It was cold outside today and they were all outside when I got there and the runny noses were out of control. With a 1:5 ratio I really don't expect to see clean faces!

They help clean but my kids aren't super clean at pickup time. Nothing excessively gross but they definitely aren't skipping baths on school days.

DD is not in daycare but heck, when she has a runny nose even I can't always keep up with all the snot. And she is the only kid I am looking after!

I can also understand the argument and reasoning of wanting to minimize a daycare providers exposure to highly contagious pinkeye. I'm sure they don't want to spread that around the entire center.

a lil snot/runny nose, a smear of lunch leftover? sure, not a big deal.

anything more than that? it's obviously irritating to the kids too, i would def expect them to wipe their face!

I'm not very picky about wiped noses, so I don't notice particularly.

But for something that was too contagious to touch, a teacher would take the child out of the room to be picked up by a parent rather than not care for them. (For the older kids, a teacher waits with the child on a bench in the front hall and read some books. I've never had to pick up one of our kids as an infant for sickness, but I would imagine they might take the baby to the director's office to wait, where there is some space to sit on the floor with the baby.) Leaving a kid with crusted-over eyes seems cruel to me :(

@mediagirl: It's so true...once I'm not a fan, everything that person does is offensive!

And I can understand that - it's hard, especially when you really like a teacher that was there prior to a new one (with attitude) comes along.

@2PeasinaPod: hahahaha. Nice. You know, I asked her about the room and the babies and she said it started when the new baby teacher started. She just doesn't give as much TLC as the old teacher used to. She also has an attitude, which I'm sure isn't helping.

I loooove our daycare but there are def times that I think they could do a better job cleaning lo's face. But, it's never quite as bad as described here, just some dried snot (I pick lo up at 3, right after nap, so there isn't much time to wipe her between wake up and pick up though they do change her diaper) or when she was littler and ate purees there would be some fried on her face. But that's a really small deal to me since I love everything else about our center and lo is thriving there

@mediagirl: I don't think it's normal for that level of grossness. LO1 has been to 4 centers now and only 1, the first one, had a somewhat consistent problem with this stuff and in that case, it was indicative of the overall sloppiness of the center--poor communication with us, messy faces, teachers not doing a great job, etc. So we switched her.

On the other hand, LO went to a Bright Horizons (a huge corporate chain) using the back up care plan while I was on maternity leave, and I noticed her particular teachers there were SUPER about keeping the kids clean and tidy. LO never even had so much as a food stain on her shirt at the end of the day, and they often re-did her hair after nap time. Her hair bows and everything were always perfect at the end of the day, which is above and beyond what I expect.

I also have to ask since I missed the line about your friend pulling her girls from this day care at the end of the year...is this a BEC situation?

My FIL drives me insane. He comes to our house every Monday to watch LO1 while I work (LO2 goes to day care). He's done this since LO1 was 3 months old, so DH and I didn't want to take the time spent with each other away from them. He's also doing us a big favor.

BUT, everything he does drives me nuts. He will make coffee in the morning, mix in his half & half and put the dirty spoon on a napkin on my kitchen counter right above the dishwasher. He doesn't use the spoon again, and it stays there until I'm done working and put it in the dishwasher myself or DH does when he gets home. He undermines me with LO1 and coddles him when I discipline him. Even when he's trying to do something helpful, I find something wrong with it because BEC!! Maybe your friend doesn't like this day care so much that no matter what they do in her eyes, it will never be good enough?

I get not touching the baby's face when she has pink eye. That totally makes sense! I think they could have told the parent why though instead of just saying hello when the parent walks in the room like nothing is wrong. (I realize I didn't say that the teacher didn't mention the baby's face).

Maybe we were spoiled. Yes, sometimes M came home with some swiped snot on her face (they wiped it but the residue wasn't completely gone) but she was never found with trails of snot and yuck all down her face. She went to a non-corporate place from 14wk to age 1, though.

It bothers me if it's beyond my acceptable meter--like, if there's a tiny bit of leftover food or what looks like recent snot, okay, I just wipe it then or there. But if it's dried, crusted on snot that's clearly been there a while, or food from lunch and I'm picking up at 4:30 pm? No.

It's happened once or twice when our head teacher isn't there that day, and I just make a big production of saying "Oh my gosh! Look at all the food and snot on your face!" And then asking the teachers for some wipes so I can make her presentable before going to the car.

My generalization is that it seems to be the younger teachers who don't have kids of their own that don't notice/care.

@mediagirl: I would think that because pink eye is SO incredibly contagious, they wouldn't want to touch the goopy part with anything...including a wet paper towel or tissue. Even if they wash their hands really well, one touch to another baby could mean that baby is now exposed to pink eye. So in that case, I would let it slide.

I also agree that no matter how much I wipe my baby's or 3.5 year old's nose, it's constantly running. I would make their little noses so sore if I wiped every few seconds.

With that said, yes, our day care wipes faces. Both LOs are always really clean when we come pick them up. If your friend is concerned, it might be worth a mention to the teacher or director instead of stewing about it.

Generally, yes, they do clean her face/hands, but there are a lot of kids and they are all snotty in the winter time, so I understand if kids are snotty and there is just one teacher. I don't let it bother me. Heck, I wipe H's nose all the time and she usually has snot dripping back down right after I wipe it if she's got a cold.

I would be pretty upset about that. But generally speaking during the winter months, snot crusted, runny nose is pretty common at pick up. If it's really bad, we do say something.

I expect their face to be clean after eating (they use baby wipes for this).

I suspect your friend is exaggerating.

Kids with runny noses are constantly running. You'd have to be on them all day long in order to ensure that they had a clean face before their parent arrived, and if you do that with one kid, it means you don't have time to do it with another. Same with pink eye. As soon as you wipe it up, there's more. It's unrealistic to expect kids in daycare to be 100% clean all of the time, especially if there's only one teacher for 4 kids and they are all sick (which is likely since they are all just sharing germs with each other constantly).

Well, my daycare wipes faces, but it's never like completely as clean as I would do it at home. Like you see crusted over swipe marks on the face or something at pick up. It drives me nuts, and I started putting DS in bibs on days he has colds so it's easier to wipe him up right then and there instead of reaching for a wipe, which helped, but I made peace with the fact that they have 5-6 other kiddos with runny noses and can't be anal about that as I am at home (it really bugs me at home if DS has runny nose). I just keep wipes in the car and mop his hands and face down the minute I get him into the car seats everyday.

As to the friend with pink eye, I wonder if the teachers were trying to limit touching her to prevent spreading the germs? I would be upset too, but I can't imagine why they would just leave her to completely crust over like that unless there was some reason.

This seems like something that would be expected to me - babies need love, food and sleep. Part of that love is keeping them clean, right? A friend recently told me that more often than not when she goes to pick up her 7 month old, the babies in the room have snot dripping down their faces. She picked up her daughter one day because she was told she had pink eye. When she got there, both of her baby's eyes were crusted shut and there was goop dripping down her face. She took her into the bathroom, put a warm cloth on her face and voila, baby looked fine. Is that not just general care??

Does your childcare clean the baby's faces?? What would you do if you found your baby like this and see other babies like this more often than not?

And I should mention she is pulling her girls from this childcare at the end of the school year but can't do it until then.
