For infant to toddler switch (at 18 months), they try to move right at 18 months. For toddler to primary, they move either in September or January.

My understanding from the director is that it's basically governed by the state. For infant to toddler switch, they have to file some kind of paperwork to do it at a different time. (For example, there was a child with some motor delays, so I think they waited longer to move her.) For toddler to primary, they have a six month window to do the move and teachers make a recommendation about the best time to move. (You have to be potty-trained in the primary room, though.)

When they're ready they transition to the toddler room. When they are around 3 or in August, they transition to preschool. It depends on how far their birthday is to the August switch. Some transition earlier because they will be 3 for more than 6 months prior to August.

I'm a bit sad because I just found out that LO will be the only one in his room that won't transition in August. He's been the youngest there for a while but I didn't realize just how much younger he was!

Everyone moves together in August. It's so nice because they have all been together since they were itty bitty. They are all within 2 months of each other age-wise so it works.

Dd is in preschool, so no infant care, and they move up like in elementary school. Dd is actually in the class above her technical age group because she's a September baby and the other class was full, but they have both a pre-k and t-k so she will do both if we stay there throughout, so she goes to kindergarten basically right before she turns six, but in the class she's supposed to be in.

At daycares, it was at their birthday or when they hit XYZ milestone.

At preschools it seems to be at the start of the school year, everyone transitions.

Near their birthday, but I have seen them hold kids back a few months if they don't think they are ready.

For the most part they move together at the beginning of the school year (which happens to be around E's birthday). This last year I think there were 10 of them that moved at once. But they also sometimes move one at a time around their birthday, so they don't have a much older child in a younger class.

Both. In the babies and young toddler rooms it's based on age/readiness. But once they get to the 2-3 year room they move everyone as a group in September. But they have moved certain kids up early if there was a spot and they were ready. DD1 is in the 3-4 preschool room now and they will all move up to the 4-5 PreK room in September. I imagine they are trying to mimic school schedules now that they are older.

I'm pretty sure on their birthdays.

DD started in the older infant room when she went in at 10 months; and I know several kids have moved on already. DD will be the last one to go since her birthday is in Dec! She will be moving up when she hits 18 months this June.

Which I actually wanted to talk to the teachers/director about.. I want to see if there are still relatively older kids in her room so that she isn't the only toddler left with a bunch of babies!

All at the same time at the beginning of the school year, except from babies to toddlers. Then they do it in two batches, one in September for the kids who are ready, and one in September. It's nice, because the kids are together all year and then move into a new room together. So we get to know the families really well!

ETA: She's in a toddler room now, where everyone will turn 2 this year. Next year, she will be in the 2 year old room, then 3, then 4s, which is the UPK room. With the baby to toddler transition, they either go straight to the toddler room in September (usually by 15-18 months) or, if they're only around 12 months then, they will move to the one year old toddler room in January.

I voted other; our daycare has mixed age classrooms for infants+toddlers, from 6 months-3. any kid who is like 2.8 or something like that, I'm not sure of the cutoff, in September transitions to one of the 3s+4s rooms. so, lo will be in the same classroom for 3 years--last year she was the baby at 6 months, this year she's in the middle, and next year she will be one of the oldest at 2.5 at the beginning of the year.

We have been to two different childcare centers and they always transitioned the children when they hit the next age. So at 1, they would transition them to the 2s room. We are moving to a preschool that transitions the entire class together. What does your childcare center do?
