Yes, ours does conferences 2x a year and I love them. The teachers have a binder for each child that special artwork/projects go into, much like a portfolio of the child's time at that school. They have handwriting samples from each month (for the preschool, obviously the 2 year old class doesn't do this) so you can see the progression and the teachers also have a huge checklist of things for kids getting ready for Kindergarten in the fall. A lot of the social-emotional stuff you wouldn't think to ask about - they have it all written down, with examples of how your child interacts with peers and follows directions. I think these conferences are so helpful, especially as my daughter approaches kindergarten.

The school doesn't shut down; they have an extra teacher to cover classes while the head preschool teacher meets with parents.

Yes, twice a year, each room splits up their students among the teachers and you sign up for a time with your assigned teacher. So each night (3 nights per room) one teacher stays late and has their conferences. Almost every time we weren't able to attend and they've been flexible in meeting with us first thing in the morning or we'll get to pickup a little early. The teacher takes us aside and they get a floater to cover the room.

It's usually quick but we go over a form that they've filled out that outlines all the developmental accomplishments our child has gone through, any challenges, and goals for the next half year. Since we both work full time and can't be involved very much, we both really appreciate the insight into their progress. They used to keep a binder with all the updates and printed out pictures of the kids demonstrating things (on a certain date, WJ working with patterns with shapes and colors, and a picture of him working on an art project demonstrating that... so cute) but the director changed and they stopped doing that.

Yeah, ours is in a couple weeks. They close for one day. The childcare isn't a problem for us since he doesn't go on Fridays anyway, but the timing of the conferences is. It happens to be on my last day before maternity leave and they only had early afternoon open when we signed up, so now I probably can't go.

Yep, we have ours tomorrow, curious to see if it will happen or not.

They don't close the school, they bring in subs so the kids are in class while the teachers talk to the parents.

@Beehive: You make a great point! The preschool has morning and afternoon sessions (and a lot of kids just go a few days a week). So most parents don't rely on the preschool for full-time childcare. Guess that's why this hits us harder than most other families at the preschool!

@mrbee: We have been doing them since the 2s room. It is nice to get a fuller picture of how LO is doing in the class, peer interactions, etc. BUT, they don't shut down, just have parents come in during nap. I don't know how I would feel if it took away my childcare.

@mrbee: Yes, they did, for one day. It's not as big a deal for us though, as it's not our primary childcare - we have a nanny and preschool is only 1/2 day, 3 days a week. I seem to remember when I was a kid that parent teacher conferences were always in the evening, after school!

Our preschool does, and at first I thought it would be silly (what can they say about a 2 year old?), but it was so interesting. They pointed out things DS does well in school that we didn't even know he did, and let us know what they're working on with him so we can reinforce it at home. Really valuable!

Montessori does this. I learn so much about my girls during conferences. I really look forward to them. In fact, we just scheduled extra office hours today and had a productive talk with our teachers.

During conferences they show pictures of the children doing works, highlight trouble spots and strengths.

LO's preschool was closed last week for parent teacher conferences. It was actually nice to talk to the teacher one on one about LO's progress and where we would like to see him in the next few months.

Yes but they don't close. I found it totally pointless. We talk to the teacher every day. It makes sense in elementary school when you don't have at least a 5 min. conversation every day with the teachers/parents.

She had her first one at 18 months. They do them on one day in the middle of the day. The director covers the class while one teacher meets with parents.

Yes, twice a year. But we don't close, they arrange coverage for each teacher to have one day away from the classroom & the teachers alternate days. I love conferences as both a preschool teacher and a parent (I like hearing how my kid is progressing and I likegetting feedback from parents & hearing their goals for their children so I can teach better). I don't know how excited I'd be as a parent if care was closed! Although, that is how public schools roll

That's crazy that they shut down! Our has them if you want them twice a year, but they're after hours and by appt. I didn't schedule one because my kid is 2 and his teacher felt that unless we really wanted one, there wasn't much point for the 2's. I agreed.

Yes they do two per year. The first is in person or on the phone if you request it because of scheduling conflicts. The 2nd is request only meaning if your child is doing well they dont need one unless you want one for some reason

I didn't realize that our daughter's preschool holds a parent teacher conference, until last week when they told us that they're closing the preschool for two days so they could meet with all the parents one on one.

I'm not sure what there is to talk to parents of preschoolers about. In all honesty, I'd rather have the childcare than a conference!
