I think so. One of the benefits of living in a big city is that there's support for almost any life choice! I was unimpressed by the lactation support in our hospital, but we had an easy time finding an LC and support groups. I've been going to LLL meetings since LO was born too.

I think so, though I haven't actually had the chance to use any of the resources yet. But I know there are multiple drop in BF support groups around, and my hospital has LCs who visit every mom plus a BF class every morning that new moms are encouraged to attend the day after delivery if at all possible. From speaking to another mom last night she said she had great support in the hospital and after.

I live in Portland freaking Oregon, so there is a ton of support. We even have support groups for women who DON'T breastfeed here, because it's the default choice in general.

Nope, not at all! The closest IBCLC is over 100 miles away, we don't have a local LLL group, & most pedis are "supportive" but still very conventional when it comes to feeding, growth, and nutrition. We are actually having to go out of town for a pedi b/c we cannot find one here knowledgeable & truly supportive of breastfeeding.

Our hospital offered an open group session with the IBLC twice a week. I made sure to attend as often as I could.

There's a lot of support for BFing here, at least in the circles I run in. I'm very thankful for it!

I don't think so. You can have a LC come to your home, but that's about it. Most moms in my area switch over to formula pretty quickly so maybe the two go together.

@hergreenapples: I got the impression that a lot of the nurses at my hospital were big advocates of breastfeeding. Sometimes it was hard for them to be helpful though - they'd try to help me with Xander's latch and he would latch perfectly while they were there. Then when they were out of the room, he'd latch badly, haha. I had these horrible hickeys on my nipples after the first couple feedings and it took weeks to get things right. Sorry to hear your nurses were so terrible. :(

@Adira: I wish my hospital had been like that! The LC at the hospital was HUGELY helpful, but the nurses were downright terrible. Any time I called them for help with BFing they literally just shoved DD, quite roughly, onto my boob with no instruction of any kind....I think this is likely why I ended up with such bad cracks and bleeding.

I honestly don't know if there are any breastfeeding support groups in my area, although it's definitely possible! I just never researched it. We do have a bunch of lactation consultants though, which I've found invaluable! And at my hospital, they were VERY supportive of breastfeeding and did everything they could to help me get started so I would have a successful breastfeeding relationship with my baby.

My SIL goes to a breastfeeding support group a couple of times a month. When I was struggling I was just too tired to reach out for support, even though it's here.

I feel really lucky to live somewhere where there is a lot of BFing support. Aside from a number of different birth/postpartum support centres that offer private lactation consultations, we also have at least four BFing drop-in clinics each week. I'm heading to one shortly - I feel like we're doing pretty well with BFing now (thank goodness, because the first 3-4 weeks were HELL), but I'm still going to pop in because I love the support and social atmosphere and I want to weigh DD.

Is this typical in most communities? I really have no idea. Did you take advantage of BFing supports in your community? Did you find them helpful? Honestly, if it weren't for the amazing LCs in my city I wouldn't still be BFing....they're pretty much my heroes!
