We have to register and have paid for one, but if you don't have any false alarms, it's extended for another year for free (and will continue to be unless there is a false alarm.) But there was no listing people or giving out keys/codes.

We are "required" to have one. But we are rebels, and don't. The risk locally in not having one is you can be fined if the police show up to an alarm without a permit you are running the risk of being fined. Honestly, I think it's a revenue generator for the city as they don't limit their response to permit holders.

Thanks everyone. I guess its different from one county to the next.

@bushelandapeck: I think they rationale is that in case of emergency if we arent there, they want a responsible adult you can step in?

Normal here :) We just had to fill out the application and pay $30 initially. It's $5 per year to maintain it.

ETA: We didn't have to give anyone our code or house key.

We had to register with the county (so the police knew we had a working alarm), but didn't have to share the code or keys with anyone.

Interesting! we live in MA and have an alarm but no such permit or notification to others was mandated. That seems so odd to me! What is the rationale behind having to notify others of the alarm and code?

we moved recently into a first house and its been exciting but also stressful and we have learnt so much about being homeowners! One of the things we found out is that to have a security system we need to pay for an alarm permit yearly. it isnt expensive but it just came as a surprise to me. The alarm permit application requires that we list a minimum of 2 people who live within 30 miles, and have our home keys and know our alarm code! But we are new to this state and new to this area, so I find it kinda bizarre.

Is this normal everywhere else
