Well, LO is only 5 months so I'm not sure how she'll come home when she's older. But for now, our daycare provider keeps her very clean. In fact, she changes her soiled onesies, even if there's just the tiniest stain on it (confession- I've been known to leave those lil stains sometimes when they're dried and I'm lazy). I always see her wiping the other kids faces so that bodes well for the future.

@Andrea: Our daycare is also more intimate. There's just 4 kids there on some days so it's easier to manage. And it's also half day, so just the probability of him getting dirty is less than if he was there all day.

@Boogs: I think that they do have free choice time for glue which is why there may not be smocks on them. Versus during paint time, they use smocks, but I guess they get dirty anyway. I mentioned it to another parent and she has had a similar experience. She thinks it is because you can't always see everything in the classroom lighting but once you go out to natural light it is more apparent. Makes sense!

@Andrea: Oh, they don't have free choice time where they may have used glue at another time? You should ask them about it. Since glue dries clear and the kids were running around outside after using the glue, maybe they genuinely really didn't see it. I think talking to them would be great because it would make them more aware and make you feel better.

@artbee: I definitely only save the really nice clothes for the weekend!

@eeh: @BoogieBea: @Boogs: I know they do have smocks which is why I'm confused when my daughter comes home with color all across the front of her shirt. I think the smocks have sleeves, too, but she ends up with color on her arms as well. But as @Boogs says, it can still be hard to keep kids clean.

@Boogs: As far as the glue, I think they may not wear smocks when they are gluing. And I know it was there for a while because they go out to the playground after art time and when I went to pick her up they were already done with the playground. I think I am more bothered by that since it is on her skin and not just her clothes. I may bring it up if I see that again. Thanks!

It hard because I've worked in situations where kids get dirty. From my experience, most caregivers try really hard to keep the kids and their surroundings clean, but it can be so hard to do, even when kids do wear smocks. As for things like glue on the face, it's hard to know if it has been on a child's face for hours. If ever you har any questions about things like that, it's always more than okay to speak with your LO's caregivers.

My son is usually pretty clean when I pick him up. She encourages cleaning up and putting things away so he's actually learned some good habits about cleanliness and tidiness. And they always wear a smock when they use paint.

I would be annoyed if my kid looked like that when I picked them up at regular pick up time. If I stopped in early and they were in the middle that's one thing but I think part of doing those activities is planning accordingly and having enough time for cleanup. It's not that hard to keep a pile of old shirts to use as smocks either. Perhaps you could ask about donating some?

My lo isn't in daycare, but my mil used to be the director of a preschool. They always told parents they did messy art projects so don't put them in nice clothes. She said lots of parents wouldn't listen and complain when the kids ruined their clothes. But I'm assuming they cleaned them up the best they could and washed their faces....at least I hope so!

My LO's daycare does daily art projects with them so it gets pretty messy I presume. For example, when I went to pick her up this evening, she had some dried glue on her face and shirt. I've had to throw out a few shirts recently because the marker/paint/whatever they used did not come out in the wash, even though they say everything is "washable". Now I know you shouldn't put your kids in anything that is too nice, but is it too much to ask that dried glue not be on her face hours later?

How do your kids end up looking by the end of the day?
