@Irene: Happy 6 month to your little one! I was told that "sleeping through the night" was 6-8 hours for a 2 month old, but until I get at least 8 hours of sleep myself and wake up after 6AM, I wouldn't consider my babe to be "sleeping through the night".

@rubies: Yes, I've been blessed with a good night sleeper... napping, on the other hand, is a totally different story.

@emahlee: My LO (6 months tomorrow!) also does 5-6 hour stretches too.... in fact many nights he did 8-10 hour stretches. We put him down at 7-ish, and he would wake at 2-4 ish for milk. However, my pediatrician's definition of "sleeping through the night" is 12 hours (eg. 7p-7a). My friends who does formula or a mix of formula and breast milk tells me their babies go down at 9pm and would wake the other morning at 8-10am... no feeding necessary in the middle of the night.... Another friend of mine who exclusively breastfed her baby goes down at 7:30p and wakes up at 5-6am consistently.

Kinda? We put Lucas down at 7:30-8 each night and then dreamfeed him with a bottle of breastmilk at 10:30PM. He is then able to sleep a 5-6 hour stretch and wake up between 4-5AM for a feed before waking up for the day at 8AM.

He's been doing the 5-6 hour stretch since he was 7 weeks; he's currently 9 weeks old.

@irene: Hm... I didn't start being regular about dream feeds until he was about 8 months old, so he may also have just been ready to grow out of that 3-4am wake up with a little prodding? I don't know. You'll get there soon, I'm sure. (side note: I started dream feeds because of nursing strikes... ah, the simplicity of breastfeeding, eh?)

@rachiecakes: I am totally with you! He doesn't get to be a baby forever so I cherish the time I get to breastfeed him - not to mention we have nursing strike issues so the night feeding was actually quite enjoyable because it has been 99% nursing strike free.

@Schmei: So weird, even though there were nights he woke up / stirred at 10:30 / 11-ish and I feed him, he would still wake up between 2-4 and won't go back to sleep unless I feed him. Bummer for us :(

PB is 9 months old. Since I started dream feeds (nursing him around 10:30pm before I go to bed) he's been sleeping through the night (7:15-ish pm to 6:30am). Unless he's teething, but my theory is that nursing helps his gums feel better if he's really hurting, so I go ahead and get up with him.

Before that he was waking up once a night, around 4am - and I get up at 6:30 for work, so that was killing me.

@irene: My pediatrician also suggested dropping the night feedings (between 7pm and 5am) but since I work full time and don't get to nurse him during the day, I'd rather have that time to nurse him even if he's not sleeping through the night. He won't be a baby forever and someday I'll miss this time with him.

DS is 7 months, I work full time so he gets BM bottles during the day and occasionally gets formula while I'm away if he's being fussy and not finishing bottles (hate to waste the BM!). When I get home, he's nursed exclusively. I feed him before bed, once during the night (around 2:30/3am) and in the early morning before I leave for work.

Cobi is 5 months and still wakes twice between 12am-8:30am. He was always to low on the weight percentiles that I didn't feel comfortable weaning him off of night feedings. I probably won't either until he starts solids... we'll see how I feel in a month or two.

olive is almost 10 months old and wakes up at least once a night. i think if i night weaned her, she would sleep through the night. but i am ok with it because she sleeps so much at night -- usually 13 1/2 hours.

charlie was getting exclusive breastmilk, and he started sleeping through the night at 4 1/2 months when we sleep trained, but he was sleeping 10 hour stretches.

it is much easier to juggle two kids when one of them is sleeping 13 1/2 hours, so i don't want to mess with that. I don't mind waking up in the middle of the night if it means Olive sleeps 16+ hours a day! (she also naps 3 hours)

LO is EBF, 11 weeks old, and has been sleeping through the night (8-10 hours) since about 7 weeks. She still nurses quite a bit during the day, so I think she's just getting all the calories she needs then. I'm not looking forward to sleep regressions and teething to mess that up.

My 3 month old sleeps through the night. But now I dont know if its a good thing, because since she started sleeping through the night she misses 2 feedings and this has caused her weight gain to slow down. To the point that the pediatrician recommended adding formula to her breastmilk but reducing the water ratio to make it more calorie condensed.

My LO is 3 months old and mostly sleeps through the night 9:30-5am. She'll eat at 5 and sleep again anywhere from 7 to 9. Once in awhile she will wake up around 2:30/3.

I actually prefer her to wake up once during the night so that I don't wake up super engorged. It hurts so much. When I can drag myself awake I try to pump around 3 am.

LO is 3 months old. He goes to bed around 10:30pm, then wakes up to eat between 4 and 7am, then goes back to sleep for another 4 hours after nursing. Since some nights he sleeps "through the night" and other nights he doesn't, I'm not going to try to change anything right now.

My LO slept 8-10 hours at a time until I had to go back to work at 12 weeks. Since then, her sleep is getting worse and she's waking every 2.5 hours, hungry, because she is only eating enough to take the hunger off and then falling asleep. We're starting to feed her a bottle instead of letting her nurse, since she'll eat more from the bottle before falling asleep, and therefore let her (and us) sleep longer.

Plus, our pediatrician said that he doesn't want her to take any more calories at night, so we're really trying to wean her off of the night feedings.

My son is 15 months old and still wakes at 3 am for a nursing (and between 5:30 and 7:30 am). He is underweight so we haven't done anything about it. We are going to try and cut it out when I go back to school (the middle of August). I am just not sure how else to get 4 feeds in a day.

We night weaned at the same time we sleep trained and took away the swaddle, around 6.5 months. We chose to do it then because he was no longer waking at night for food but to be held and comforted so every time I put him to the breast he'd nurse for maybe a couple minutes but wouldn't actually take a feeding, he'd comfort nurse and since we had pacifiers, we started to do that instead.

Are Exclusively breastfed babies suppose to sleep through the night?

I am exclusively breastfeeding and my LO (almost 6 months now) still wakes up 1-2 times a night to feed, between 7:30p to 7:30a (usually between 12-5am he would stir). I've been fine with it as I'd be engorged and can't sleep anyway.

However, many of my friends had their babies weaned off the early AM feeding when they were 2-3 months, but they did a mix of formula and breast milk. Even our pediatrician told me to ignore him at night.

What is your experience? What would you do?
