Yes... we do now. We lived in one dark apartment once (but it had a backyard! in Manhattan!)... We lasted there not even two years and learned our lesson after that. We had a ton of natural light at our following place and now at our current one.

Luckily the room we spend the most time in (the living room) has nice big windows that let in a lot of light.

@Mrs. Jacks: gorgeous!!!

I feel like I always have two answers for home questions.

Ours does not. The only room that gets a lot of light is the kids room. Our living room is so dark and depressing. It doesn't help that we have dark floors that go into the kitchen with dark cabinetry. We also have tree's everywhere blocking the sunlight. When it's cloudy, I have to have every lamp and ceiling light on.

Our new house, does! We have two huge windows from the top of the stairs that let a lot of light into the house. The mornings will be better for natural light. The living area does get a little dark in the afternoon but not nearly as bad as our old house.

@sunny: Ok, so I thought this was initially a little cheesy when we first saw our house, but our dining room has a box beam ceiling (very pretty). In the recesses, they placed a number of small square mirrors (I'll see if I can find a picture). The dining room only has one set of windows and though it is south facing, light is blocked coming in... so those mirrors take in all the ambient light and focus it downward filling up the room.

It is very tasteful and very light amplifying!

[attach=104/13/mlhfqr.600x336.dining-rooM.png]

Another thing you can see is that the brick is sealed, which also amplifies light and then the travertine tiles in the kitchen are the lightest dune color and also amplify light.

@Mrs. Jacks: can you give an example of a light amplifying technique in action? That sounds cool!

Our house gets very little and we live in a cloudy city :-( I feel like I need the lights even in the afternoon sometimes!

Somewhat- for an apartment it's actually really great! Although its a lot of really harsh light which is a disappointment because then the curtains have to be drawn during the day.
It's sooo much better than our last place. I hated how dark it was.

It is definitely a must when we eventually buy a house

Yes! Our apt is wedge shaped in the lounge area and it is all windows around the crescent, plus big sliding glass doors (four of them in the lounge/dining areas) and big wall windows. Considering we live on the beach in Australia with ocean views, I'd say lots of windows and natural light are a must! The bedrooms all have big windows and lots of natural light as well, but they don't face the ocean.

One of our criteria in finding a place to live is natural light and orientation to the sun (here that's north facing, in the UK/US it is south facing).

Yes, I love natural light. We have four skylights (2 in the dinning area and 2 in the family room) in our home. It is the one unique aspect of our home that I love the most.

No, and the bedroom only gets light first thing in the morning, it is so dark the rest of the day! The living room gets decent light during the day, but still not what I'd consider a lot. The kitchen and spare room get hardly any because of the way the houses are situated in either side.

Yes! We have huge windows and are on the corner so we finally get such great light (well, when we remember/bother to open the blinds). Our old apt was ground level and got hardly any light, plus we always had the blinds closed for privacy since you could see directly in from the sidewalk.

I love all the light we get now and am psyched that our baby photos will hopefully be better because of it. The landlord also left blackout curtains in the bedroom!
