@regberadaisy: O- is a universal donor, and is compatible with every other blood type (but ironically, persons with O- can only receive O- blood).

@regberadaisy: Blood type O-Negative is considered a universal donor. Conversely, those with ,blood type AB positive are universal recipients. No blood type will reject all types

I'm almost positive M had hers done at the hospital.

@Foodnerd81: @FutureMrsMcK: what's universal blood? I thought there was a blood type that rejects all other? How can there be a universal blood then.

I don't know if mine will cover it, but I don't think it's really that important to know. In general, in case of an emergency I think they would start with universal blood and type it right then and there anyway-- I feel like there is too much room for error, like, a mom says he's one blood type but she's thinking of her other kid or something, you know? That could have disastrous results so they probably would check it anyway.

BUT... I could be totally wrong about that! I don't work in the medical field and actually have no idea what they really do, it just makes sense in my head. I don't even know DH's blood type, and only know mine because I've donated blood.

I believe ours covered it as well. We also got her blood type the day after she was born. It was just one of the things they did along with all the other tests!

Our hospital didn't type E's blood when he was born. I asked his pedi about it this morning, and she said most insurance (mine included) doesn't cover it because they don't think it's a medical necessity, which just seems dumb to me. She said if there's an emergency they'll give him universal blood, and if he needs surgery they'll type it before, but otherwise we'd have to pay $200-$300 out of pocket to have it typed.

Does this seem weird to anyone else? I would think knowing your (or in this case, your LO's) blood type was important! (I called my ins co and she's right, they won't cover it.)
