one time when LO was fussy, my letdown did not occur from a combination of LO not wanting to latch for long enough and me totally stressing about it when i realized what was happening. since then i've been a little anxious about my letdown each time, which i know is counterproductive. the experience was pretty disheartening.

Yes! On mornings I worked, I always pumped significantly less when I was in a hurry.

@KT326: It's not that I didn't feel it - I know nothing was happening by the way LO was acting :(

@Kemma: That's not a bad idea! There's a hymn I often sing LO when we're having a nice nursing session or rocking, maybe I'll try that next time.

@MamaMoose: I definitely think supplementing has exacerbated this issue because she likes the fast flow of the bottle. If we are relaxing at home, she's okay to comfort nurse & get the milk slowly, but when we are out & she's hungry, we both end up frustrated. I want to just give her a bottle & get it over with but it feels like a slippery slope in my situation, so I try to make her nurse.

I struggled with this for most of my breastfeeding relationship. But we never supplemented so she just had to be patient and figure it out. She always did.

Letdown doesn't react kindly to stress! I have heard of some mums being able to trigger letdown with a phrase or song - mine was "here comes the milk"!

I didn't always feel my let down. It got really strong around 3-4 months and then by 6 months I either didn't notice or didn't feel it.

@beaker: @mrsjyw: The fact that it happened for you at the end of BFing makes me think it is related to my low supply :(

That happened to me towards the end. I actually found myself picturing the pump room at work when I was nursing since I never had trouble letting down there! Boobs are weird.

I'm wondering if this is because of my low supply or if it happens to everyone? I had to go to a funeral today, and LO needed to eat so I used a private room. She had just been passed around by relatives & was screaming, and obviously I was kind of uncomfortable in the setting. I could not let down at all. LO kept fussing & pulling off which only made it worse as I was stressed out. Does this happen to any of you? I am trying not to let things like this discourage me from continuing to breastfeed.
