@BabyBoecksMom: Your LO sounds a lot like mine! She'll happily stay up when we're out but once we get into the car to go home she realizes she's tired and miserable and will cry the entire time. Or she'll fall asleep in the car for 15-20 minutes and not nap when we get home. And then the rest of the day is a mess.

I'm pretty flexible. DS (6.5 mos) will sleep in the car when we're out doing errands on weekends, and he transfers well from the carseat into the crib if we're out past his bedtime. I pick and choose what I'll stay out for though - Super Bowl wasnt worth it for me (we went home at halftime) but a big birthday party is ok in my book.

We're somewhere in the middle. We try to stay home for her first nap. The second nap can be pushed back or on the go. Most nights it's easy to stick with her 7-7:30 bedtime, but we push it back once or twice a week.

Yep, our lives definitely revolve around his sleep needs. Our nights are devoted to getting him to sleep. I think that this will change once his sleeping patterns get more reliable and predictable.

For the most part, yes. She has never been able to sleep anywhere but her room, and just recently the car. She is too alert and doesn't want to miss out on anything so she will keep herself awake. And then she's miserable to deal with the rest of the day. As she got older, and dropped down to two naps, it's been SO much easier for us, but we still have to make sure she gets her naps. She's 1 yr now.

@MsLipGloss: Yes! And it bugs me when people judge me for keeping to LO's schedule fairly strictly because they're not the ones who has to deal with a fussy cranky baby in the middle of the night!

Ironically, pre-baby, I was all "Oh, I don't want to revolve my life around my baby's schedule. I want to train him to sleep anywhere." SO. DIDN'T. HAPPEN. I didn't take into account the fact that my baby would not be an easy going sleeper.

@Nerdbee: Exactly. While my LO is still a long way from STTN, a tired baby means 5-7 wake ups versus 2-3 for a non-tired baby.

Right now, yes. If LO's sleep patterns were more regular, I would not have a problem *coloring outside the lines* so to speak with her routine. But right now, the only thing I can control is her bedtime, and seeing as how she is not getting nearly enough sleep, I want to avoid upsetting that routine as much as possible!

Pretty much. We don't take it so far as not participating in things that we really want to, but we try to keep it consistent for him. He is so much happier in a strict schedule. But this weekend, we went to Disney and so he napped twice in the Ergo, so there is some flexibility.

I really need to respect LO's sleep needs. When he is overtired, it usually means night wakings and/or early wake ups, which results in a cranky baby and mommy. If LO was less sensitive to overtiredness, I would probably be more lax.

We've been super respectful of my lo's sleep schedule since 3-ish months. Now that he is 11 months we are being more lax with bedtime as he can handle going to bed a little later so much better now. We are still always home for naps but we let him nap in the car every now and then (it's always a 30-40 minute nap though so we limit these).

We really try to respect his schedule. I pretty much always make sure we are home for morning nap, since that's his longer nap. We also try to be home for the afternoon nap but on a rare occasion, the nap will happen in the car to or from an outing, but I try to avoid it. Sometimes bedtime will get pushed from 7 to 7:30, but really only for a special occasion.

I'm not as concerned with daytime naps, but at night I try and avoid being out at bedtime (which the routine starts at 6pm) so we are very limited. If we are at my moms though there is a place for her to sleep. People think I'm crazy but I don't care, if friends want to hang out (who don't get it) they can come to our place :)

For the most part yes. Lo sleeps so much better in her crib, so nap time is better for everyone if were at home. Every once in awhile well let her take a car nap if needed, but we try to be home if we can.

Bed time is a little more flexible...... But not much.

No we don't let the schedule run our lives. We try to be home for our son's 800 bedtime but often we're not! And naps, forget about it! He usually gets car naps on the weekends. Our three month old doesn't have a schedule yet.

I understand when people want to maintain a strict schedule but sometimes I think they take it too far. Some special days (or most in my case haha) are worth a little change in schedule in my opinion!

I really try to keep to his morning nap (10-12 on a good day) but the rest I'm flexible on. But he also will sleep in the car no matter what so that makes it a bit easier. And I sometimes skip some errands if it means in/out of the car a lot, especially with it being so cold lately.

DD has never had a super reliable nap schedule, and even at 10 months she often sleeps better on the go, so I don't worry too much about her daytime (lack of) sleep schedule. At night is another story though. DD goes to bed at 7:30 every night, and she usually sleeps great at night. No way am I messing with that unless I absolutely need to... it never goes well!

@autumnlove: @betsyboop: How old are your LOs?

Mine is 16w and he can not sleep anywhere but in his crib, swaddled and with the lights off. I am hoping when he gets older, and swaddle weaned, I will be able to be more flexible (at least for naps?) At grandma's he has a Rock 'N Play but no one at grandmas ever puts him down long enough to stay asleep.
Nor do they agree with our CIO methods (in the rare instances that we actually need to use them)..but that's a different story.

I run errands in between naps so that his sleep doesn't get interrupted with my constant taking him in/out of the car seat. Or ill call my mom or MIL to come watch him while I go get what I need.
At night, once LO goes to bed, we're in for the night. You're welcome to come over, but we ain't leavin!

Mine definitely does and some people (my parents, some friends) think it's silly. Sorry, but I'm not willing to risk messing up my LO's nighttime sleep!
Are you a go with the flow parent who can keep your LO out past nap time/bedtime or are you the type whose outings end in a mad dash to get LO in his/her crib when it's sleepy time?
