LO goes to a diverse daycare so I've been waiting for some comment. So far all I've heard her say is that she "is no Chinese" and shakes her head. Usually it's in response to when I ask her if she's speaking Chinese but the way she says it I think she's saying she isn't Chinese (ethnicity of the daycare providers and about half of the kids).

oh, I I just realized. I guess LO does make associations already because when she sees other south asian little girls (older than her), she'll shout "Acca!" which is what she calls our niece that is 3. I'm not sure if she actually thinks it's Acca or if she thinks all little girls that look a certain way are Accas.

No, at 2 1/2 she really doesn't seem to notice. We don't live in a very diverse area, which I hate, because I feel like it's harder to discuss it when most people look the same. She LOVES Mulan, Doc McStuffins, and Pocahontas and she just says "they princesses they so pretty" so I don't' think she even notices that they look different than her which is great.

It hasn't come up yet, but she's only one. I'd love to know what books you have about race/skin color to add to our library since I know it will come up.

She hasn't commented. We live in a pretty diverse area, and her daycare is also. Plus, she owns dolls of all different kinds. We've tried to make it a non-issue as much as possible, but Im waiting for it to come up.

She's not commented about it directly, but I know she makes associations, because she'll sometimes mention her old nanny, who was Filipino, when she sees a southeast Asian woman, or asks if random Indian people on the street or in photos are our extended family members whom she doesn't see very often. Today she asked about my sister when she saw the pediatrician (similar complexion, hair color, and glasses). She doesn't talk directly about what color someone's skin, hair, or eyes are yet, but since we're a diverse family and live in a diverse community, I'll be ready to talk whenever she's interested. :)

I'm interested in getting some books about skin/hair color for her - will have to check out some of these titles.

Skin color hasn't come up with my 3 year yet. She says stuff like my hair is black just like Miss S, her friend and Snow White.

I love Mem Fox's book...I think it is called Whoever You Are!

@mrsjazz: My LO is too young, but my nephew (husband's nephew really) has brought it up several times regarding my LO. He has asked if she's brown (like DH and him) or white (like me). DH always jumps in and answers brown, but I want to just ask the nephew what he thinks---just to hear the answer. We once asked him to pick the doll that looked most like our M at FAO Schwartz when they had a huge display of all kinds of babies--and he picked an east Asian one--haha, so cute.

My LO (she'll be 3 in April) has been talking a lot lately about skin color. She knows that she is brown and is very happy being brown  One day I mentioned something about being Black and she said, "No, we're not Black, we're brown!"

She will sometimes ask what color someone's skin is and she told me that one of her BFFs has brown skin with pinky feet (she's white, her skin color is kind of peachy). It's funny that she thinks her friend is brown, too. Last night she asked me, "Is everybody brown like me?' And I told her no, that people come in many shades. We have a couple of books about skin color that I think I will break out tonight to answer some of her questions.

What about your LOs? Has this come up yet?
