DD always asks if she can bring something into the minivan (she doesn't ask about it when I drive her in my sedan haha).. ranges from plushies, dolls, books, random things like a tiny bag with a bracelet.. It has rings, bells, and various chewing surfaces. He likes to have something to hold onto while going to sleep, whether in the car or now for at-home naps and nighttime sleep (he has an A+A lovey for those), and it fits the bill. I try not to take a bunch of stuff when we go in someplace because it's hard to keep track of two kids and all their toys! A went through a phase where she was very attached to her stuffed animals, so I'd let her to take them in to the grocery store or wherever. He gets very fixated on holding things, they don't even have to be toys. He loves measuring cups (scoopies), spatulas (lala), and spoons (foon). He also has a couple small stuffed animals and some little toys cars. There are days when he needs something in each hand and gets very upset if I try to get him to leave it at home. About half the time I can get him to leave it in the car. I let them, but I like them to keep it in the car instead of bringing it into the store, or wherever we are that's public. When we go to my parents house I let them pack a bag of toys, my parents have toys at their house but they still like to bring their things to play along with the stuff already there. </p>
