@Foodnerd81: We have those silver ones! So far they have held up pretty well, although to be fair, they are the newest ones she has. I really can't tell the difference between the target ones and the normal retail stride rite.

@catlady: good to know about the target stride rite- I had assumed they would wear out faster. They have a pair of silver casual Mary Janes that I think my LO will love.

Middle of the road I think. I'll probably buy the baby new shoes for her every day shoes but be able to supplement with the less frequently worn, therefore less worn out, extras.

My LO has one pair of sparkly Mary Janes that are just destroyed though. She loves them so much, they are most definitely too small for her, and she still wants them.

Yes! I try to keep enough pairs to rotate around but they get destroyed pretty much immediately. She is currently rotating 5 different pairs which she only started wearing at the end of the spring but all of them except the newest one look like they are 10 years old.

Oddly, the brand I have the best luck with for staying nice are the Target brand stride rites (not the regular ones). She has one pair of those and they look the best out of the bunch, and the same thing happened last winter/fall.

It's happened a few times, but generally I buy enough shoes that the wear is distributed among 6-8 pairs, and I'm usually able to pass down at least 5 of those.

My son does. But I think it's because his feet grow so slowly that he's in them for a long time, therefore, more wear and tear. My daughter's feet have been growing fast (she's gone through 4 sizes this year already!) so her shoes don't have time to be destroyed.

We usually have 2-3 pairs per season with one shoe is heavy rotation. When LO1 was younger, his shoes were in good condition and were easily passed down. Now that he is older and wears his shoes for about a year before moving onto the next size, it's impossible to pass down.

Yes! I try to buy quality shoes but they still get destroyed. Especially because they still like to play a lot in the sand, I feel like they wear down quicker..

Or can they usually be handed down to a younger sibling/sold/given to a friend etc?

I swear my kids destroy shoes, so a lot of them become play shoes and I have to buy shoes every season for my youngest. Shoes are so darn expensive, I wish we could get more use out of them! Of course, we only have 1-2 pairs per season, so that could have a lot to do with it, since they are getting so much daily use.
