We do mom/baby swimming, which doesn't count. I think when LO turns 4 is when we will start with "real" lessons - swimming, ballet, skating, soccer, music (cello/piano/something), etc. (obviously, not all those at once).

@mediagirl: i read that you shouldn't start sports too young as their bodies really aren't physically capable of doing these things yet. doctors are seeing a lot more injuries amongst little kids who start sports too young. i don't think they start soccer around me until 3. i think under 3 is too young.

@sulli301: i would guess swimming is different since there is no impact on joints!

@mediagirl: I don't think that she has to keep it up if she doesn't want to. I just think that the swimming is a good way to get her around other kids, get us both out of the house, get her comfortable around the water... :) Just a fun memory for me to have & for me to tell her about. If she decides to keep swimming? awesome!

So, for those of you with kids that are in organized sports at 2 or younger, do you expect them to keep with that sport through their childhood? I just feel like 2 is so young to put them into something like that. Maybe 3 or 4, they can run around a field and kick a ball around but at 2, can they really grasp the concept yet?

I'm not sure how I feel about organized sports so young yet.

We did mommy & me budo taijitsu (martial arts) the summer after she turned 2. It was fun... I want to enroll her again this summer in a drop-off setting. But as far as her first non-mommy & me classes, DD started ballet and soccer at 2.5. It was just to get her acquainted with the settings and it was through school so not that expensive and I didn't have to shuttle her anywhere on top of her already full-time school schedule. She also started one-on-one piano at 3 yo. Right now she's really into ballet though and that's all she's taking (oh and a music class with her sister). She's 4, but she really started getting into ballet at around 3.5. I'm a proponent of starting kids early with these things so they have a variety of things they're exposed to and can figure out what they enjoy. At 3 she was really expressing which activity she enjoyed more.

i would enroll charlie in swimming and soccer now. it's not real soccer -- really just kicking the ball. but all the kids i know his age that take it love it.

i think we'll start piano lessons at 4. we have to live up to the asian stereotypes after all.

@regberadaisy: @artbee: @sulli301: Thanks for your input. I guess she isn't too young and I just have to make the choice if this is how we want to start spending our weekend time.

I took dance classes when I was 2 1/2 & I loved it! I danced all the way up through high school. DD is in her second session of mommy & me swimming which we started @ 8 months (she is almost 11 months now). I want to sign her up for a mommy & me dance or gymnastics soon too. It's fun & some social time for both of us.

@Andrea: My niece does ballet, she also started pretty early. At their studio they have a daddy daughter dance for every recital. We're always busy so we've never actually gotten to see one in person, but I always make them do the dance when they're visiting and it's the cutest thing I've ever seen in my life.

@Andrea:
I was looking for our niece because I thought it would be a great way for her to burn off energy. She has a TON of energy and is NON STOP all the time. So I thought between that and I think the school I was looking at teach them at that age to listen to direction, organization, etc. I thought that would help her out as well.
We ended up not doing it because it is a lot of time on the parents part to take them there, pick them up. So we didn't want to decide that for them esp since the two places near them are 20 minutes away. But I might rethink that for her birthday this year.

@artbee: yeah, good point, i would probably be more eager to enroll her if she was mainly at home.

@Andrea: I think it just depends on your priorities. For me it would be socialization, learning to listen to an adult other than her parents, etc. because she's not in day care. And it's worth it for me to dress her up in a cute little outfit and watch her up on the stage!

@artbee: @regberadaisy: i assume it is not "real" ballet so i am just wondering if it's worth the time and money? probably mainly the time since it is every single saturday, etc. that's a lot of effort for her just to twirl around. lol.

I think ballet at 2 year olds are really more "expressive" dance where they just twirl around. Hahaha. I know only because we look into getting classes for our niece (husband side).

I think my niece was 4 or 5 when they started signing her up for stuff. First I think it was ballet, then there was violin, then piano in there somewhere was also swimming. Swimming is the only one that really stuck and she really loves.

I did dance when I was two. It was obviously easy stuff. My first routine was to a Care Bears song, and it literally told you what to do in the song lyrics. "Jump in, jump out. Jump in, jump out. Jump. Jump. Jump. Jump." We got to dress up in Carebear costumes, I loved it! I'd love to start LO in dance at that age too, if she wants to.

It seems like swimming is popular for the wee ones. I passed by the local ballet place and they said my LO can start now that she is turning 2 soon. That is crazy. I can't imagine her doing an activity like that yet. I think I'm going to wait until she is a bit older and can get more out of it. Or is she ready for it? When are you enrolling your LOs in sports, dance, etc?
