@Mrs. Bee: What about sunflower milk? You can even make your own from raw sunflower seeds and water :). You can also use the same process for pumpkin seeds. There is also an oat milk out there.

You can pretty much make a milk out of anything!

@Mrs. Bee: well, i wouldn't worry too much either way since charlie is over 2 so he doesn't need to drink a lot of milk anyway. i think as long as he is getting a lot of calories and calcium from food, and not being milk dependent, then that is OK?

@Mrs. Bee: Soy accounts for 10-20% of the daily american caloric intake because it's so ubiquitous without adding soy milk. That's the problem with it, it's everywhere, used as fillers in processed food, added to breads, and in most vegetable oils, it's a heavily subsidized crop in the US and thus heavily apart of our diets. But there are real concerns to having too much soy.

My parents gave me goats milk when I was little because of a dairy allergy. My mom worked at a health food store so she had access to a lot of options even back then, but she said that's what worked the best for me!

@Mrs. Bee: that's a great idea. I look forward to learning more. I had never heard that too much cow's milk could be bad for a little one!

@Maysprout: @mediagirl: @looch: @sloaneandpuffy: from what i've read, soy is definitely not good in large quantities.... neither is cow's milk. i did a little bit of research on it when we were transitioning charlie to cow's milk, but i didn't pursue them (goat's milk, etc). he does not like rice milk, and i haven't tried almond milk yet.

i'm going to ask my friend who's a nutritionist and knows much more about this to write a guest post!

My son drinks soy milk. He is allergic to the Milk Protien. Now that charlie is 2 the fat content in milk that is needed for brain development isn't as important anymore. For us we chose to go with soy milk because it had the closest nutritional value to cow's milk. We did feed him more avocados and eggs to supplement the fat and good cholesterol that is missing from Soy milk. Soy milk has more calcium and protein then cow's milk.

When I'm at work (AKA not nursing him), our babe gets rice milk alternated with organic cow's milk. He doesn't have a sensitivity or allergy but I think it's good to keep some diversity in his diet. I don't know much about it but I have heard soy is not great to give (esp little boys) in large quantities so I stay away... rice and almond milks are good options.

Often people who are allergic to milk are also allergic to soy.

Nope. LO has milk in cereal in the morning and cow's milk doesn't seem to be an issue.

@mediagirl: My LO is allergic to soy, nuts, goats milk and dairy and therefore has limited "milk" options so I asked my pediatrician what exactly is it in milk that needs to be supplemented. She basically said my LO didn't necessarily need to drink milk as long as the liquids, calories, and calcium are replaced.

Does Charlie need all that milk though? I'd rather wean my son off milk as a drink completely rather than give him soy milk. I am just not convinced that large quantities of soy are a good thing, nutrition wise.

We give her soy and breastmilk. We thought she had a dairy allergy but after being tested, they ruled the 'fast acting' one out. The doctor said it still could be another type of dairy allergy so to try regular milk in a few months again.

Interesting question. I didn't know kids could have soy milk (don't have one yet). Are the health benefits the same between soy and cow's milk? My husband and I are both soy milk drinkers and would love to make our LO a soy milk drinker, as well (for us it's an allergy thing, not anything else).

She doesn't drink milk yet, but my husband can't drink milk so I wouldn't be surprised if LO can't either. At least I'm already prepared b/c I have to make dairy free meals for hubby!

I'm more of an almond milk fan. Soy is like corn and in everything, I think we get an overload in our diets and it's not all that healthy, plus since most of it's been sprayed heavily with pesticides, I'm more than a bit skeptical of it's health benefits.

Our pediatrician suggested that Charlie may have developed a milk allergy since he is prone to throwing up milk regularly, so he told us to try switching to soy for a week and see if that helps. Since Charlie also gets constipated regularly, that would kill two birds with one stone.

Does anyone else give their LO soy milk or other nondairy milk?
