@mrbee: he will look so handsome with his glasses! Has he gone through the Bob books? We've been going through each level. They are not great stories, but I think being able to read them all herself really gives DD that boost of confidence!

@mrbee: I would check with his teacher about what your goal should be :) I always told my students that at home reading was for fun! So as long as the meaning is the same I wouldn't worry about it all. He will have lots of practice over the years to become more accurate, but if he starts to dread reading you will have much bigger problems. Just my two cents! I would pick books he enjoys, and maybe for the longer books that you know are too hard you do most of the reading and have him read smaller sections. Letting him choose for fun reading will help him enjoy it more, even if the book is too tough.

@Mrs. Lion: Not sure what my goal should be! We were reading the book in the morning (it was the monthly Family Friday at school, so all the parents came in and the kids read to us.)

Definitely agree that we should read shorter and easier books... and agree with @HLK208: too that we should read books he hasn't memorized!

Thanks to everyone for the pointers! We're just now really getting going on our reading journey... so all these tips and pointers are really helpful!

It depends on your goal....are you trying to build confidence or accuracy? Are you reading when he is already tired after a long day at school? To me filler words that don't change the meaning aren't that big a deal at his age. I would probably not say anything so as not to discourage him. Thats a pretty tough book for his age. I would focus on accuracy with shorter books and focus on enjoyment with longer stories like that. I have really only taught older grades though, so the kindergarten teachers may have a better answer!

@Andrea: Hope so, thanks for the encouragement! We'll keep at it!!

Also I realized that we've been meaning to get him glasses for his mild astigmatism... it might be that his eyes have been getting tired from the strain of reading. Will get him glasses this weekend!

DD guesses at some words she doesn't know instead of sounding every one of them out and I make her slow down and do it over again. She's just trying to read very quickly, but I'd rather her do it correctly.

She used to get a lot more frustrated when I would correct her (just a few months ago), but the frustration level has gone way down now that she's a more confident reader. So maybe the same thing will happen for Charlie with the corrections.

I think you should correct him...

We have DS point to each word and sound it out. If he adds a word, I ask him to show me where he saw that word. Reading takes time! I'm trying to buy more books that I haven't read to him before so I can see where he's at without memorizing. Last night, he read Pete the Cat (which we've read a lot) and it was pretty clear he memorized it since he read it at a lightening fast speed haha.

I do that but I'm dyslexic.

I didn't answer the question but I think you should correct him.

Our son was reading Where the Wild Things Are, and kept adding words here and there to the sentences. They were just filler words like "the" and "that", but it got me thinking that maybe he wasn't really reading as much as reciting sentences that he's more or less memorized.

I started to gently correct him when he added the words, but he started to get frustrated - both because reading is hard but also because I kept correcting him. Eventually we got him using a pointer (i.e. a chopstick) like he's supposed to, to point to each word as he read it, and that seemed to help. Still though, he added some filler words here and there.

Should I be correcting him if he adds words, if it doesn't change the meaning of the sentence? Or should I be focused on mostly positive reinforcement and trying to get him to love reading?
