She started fussing every now and then after she turned 1 year. It sometimes seems random, but it also happens if I stay longer than a minute to talk with her teacher. If I left and heard her still crying, it would break my heart, but I know she stops the second I walk away and she's distracted with something else.

I would say 20% of the time lately he has a meltdown when I leave. Its a new thing, so I try to just leave quickly and say "mama always comes back, see you tonight"

Yes we have weeks here and there of separation anxiety and crying, which is random because he's usually totally nonplussed at drop off.

Yup, we get some random crying episodes. It might be because your mom did drop off. It used to be for us that I did drop off every single day. Then DS started getting up super early and DH would bring him instead. So now some days it's me and some days it's DH, and there's no pattern to it. And that's when we get more crying. I've done drop off for several days in a row now and one day had crying, but not the others. DH will take him on Wednesday so I can get in early, and I bet the change in routine will mean crying for DH.

She's usually awesome at drop-off, but sometimes she gets whiny and clingy. It's usually my fault, though, because I've taken too long getting out the door. She's always completely fine the minute I walk out the door.

My son will do this when he's in a somewhat new environment, for example, last fall I had to use the aftercare at his current school one day and my son cried because another kid was crying.

Aww!

DH usually does all drop offs and she rarely, rarely makes a fuss. I understand that when I do drop off once in a blue moon she clings onto me b/c she prefers me and it's not the normal routine.

Yep, LO is 20 months and has been going to daycare full time since 8 weeks. Usually he runs from my arms to the teachers without looking back, but maybe 1-2 times a month he throws a giant fit and won't go. I can't see any pattern to why.

DS1 has been going to preschool p/t MWF since last September. He hasn't cried at drop since the first month and today he did! Told my mom he didn't want to go in his classroom. (She sometimes does drop-off for us so this isn't new!)

She thinks that it may have a couple of new kids in class (twins) that were both crying at the entrance of his classroom.
