Yes! At gymnastics class she will hang on for at least 1 minute (her face will turn red) because she's afraid to drop.

Aww! I let J hang from the bars but he seems to know I'm always there to catch him so he doesn't mind letting go. I've never come across short monkey bars like that though - normally they're my height so I have to hold him up to get him to hold onto them anyway.

I have had this happen with the kids I nanny for, it seems pretty frequent. I usually tell them we are going to practice it, we do it once where I hold on tight and tell them to think about how far they are going. The second time I hold on loosely and basically let them drop except make sure they don't actually fall. We practice the second way a few times. Sometimes the same day and sometimes on a different day we try a third way where I put my arms out in in exaggerated silly way and basically just make sure they don't hit their head or something and let them drop.

I also tend to make a rule that if you can't do it independently you aren't invited to use that piece of equipment so they are very inclined to learn how to use it as opposed to it being forbidden.

No but I did as a kid. So my mum said to let go because she had hold of me. Only she didn't and I fell and broke both wrists  I'm still kinda scared of monkey bars.

Yesterday I was at a pre-K playground with both kids, and heard my daughter crying, "Daddy! Daddy!!" in a panic. Turned out she had grabbed onto the (very low) monkey bars at the playground, and then was afraid to let go! (It was maybe a 2 inch drop.)

She's done this a few times now, and each time I've "rescued" her. I think that maybe it's time to practice dismounting from the mini monkey bars, so she doesn't get "stuck" again.
