DS's name is DH's maternal grandmother's maiden name. His middle name is DH's name, which happens to be my MIL's maiden name. So essentially, DS has 3 last names! :)

LO's middle name is my great grandma's last name/grandma's maiden name. It's a tradition to give this name to the first born girl in each family.

Yes. L's middle name is DH's paternal grandfather's name. It is a big family name (DH's uncle and cousin both have it as theirs) but wasn't used in DH's immediate family. BIL has his grandfather's middle name though.

If we have another son he will have DH's maternal grandfather's name as his middle. It is also a big family name...DH's uncle and brother have it as their first name. It is also my brother's middle name. He passed away the year before DS was born, so we debated using it this time, but we liked the other name a little better with his first and I knew DH's living grandfather would be happy we used it. He was really honored we chose the name. If we have a girl she will have my maternal grandmother's middle name.

Yep. It's LO's paternal great grandparents' last name as his middle name. We happened to be the second one in DH's extended family to do this. One of DH's cousins has the paternal maiden name of her grandma (LO's great grandma). DH's uncle thought it was pretty neat that we did it.

Yep - but it's not our family's name! F has a pretty unusual name and people always ask us how we decided on it. Short story - we say it's a family name and leave it at that. Long story - we have a very good friend who has a family name that goes way back (like, 75 men in his family line, including his own son). We made a bet with him saying we'd name our firstborn after him if we lost. We won, but we loved it so much that we asked if we could do it anyway. And he said yes!

We've moved away from those friends, but I'm so glad we got to strengthen our friendship by "borrowing" his family's name.
