@cmomma17: it definitely seems more prevalent, and definitely awareness has increased as well. There are some theories like the "clean theory".. That say that as cleanliness due to things like antibacterial soap, etc. increases, allergies are increasing as well. Another area I haven't looked too much into but it sounds intriguing.

I cannot wait until someone figures it all out!! Until then, I am crossing my fingers that my DD will outgrow this allergy (allergist said come back in a few years and we will retest and possibly do a challenge situation). I have heard of some kids outgrowing (statistic I was given was 20%)..

@T-Mom: Thanks for sharing. Allergies seem more prevalent these days, or maybe just awareness is heightened? So I find it really interesting. I have read the new research about introducing nuts before 1 year, don't know if I'm brave enough to do it though. I asked my ped about it today at our 6 month check up and he said I can feed LO however I want, as long as I don't do peanut butter, cows milk, citrus, or honey before 1 year.

@cmomma17: Neither DH or I have nut allergies... and we have NO family history of nut allergies - nobody on either side of the family is allergic to peanuts... that's why we were so shocked to discover that DD was allergic. It was never a possibility that crossed our minds. We didn't introduce peanuts to her until she was 14 months old.

@Jennimac: I gave DD a PBJ sandwich when she was 14 months, and she started feeling unwell shortly after. About 10 minutes after she ingested it, she vomited all over the floor and hives started showing up all over her body. We took her to urgent care, and she was given some oral steroids and an epi-pen shot to calm down the reaction.

I'm not sure about breastfeeding, but she did have eczema on her cheeks during the time I breastfed, and immediately after weaning those rashes disappeared! I definitely think something in my milk was causing her rashes.

@cmomma17: in our case neither me or my DH have a peanut allergy. He has a few fruit allergies, like fuzzy fruit and also seasonal allergies, but that's it. And I did eat peanuts while pregnant and when she was less than 1yr (during short time I was bf)..

My pediatrician said there was some new research showing that offering tiny amounts of nuts starting younger than 1 yr may actually prevent the allergy.. Which is opposite to what the general practice was when my DD was a baby. But I don't know enough about it to say any more about that.

@Jennimac: I eat peanut butter like CRAZY and breastfeed (6 months+ so far). I'm so curious to find out if LO will/will not be allergic to peanuts when he finally tries them on his own someday!

Too young to know yet in our case (LO is 6 months).

I'm so curious for those with LO's with allergies - do either parents have food allergies? And was the allergen (nuts in this case) introduced before 1 year? Just curious since those are the two "facts" I hear all the time - don't give before 1 year, and if you (the parent) doesn't have an allergy there is less of a risk for LO.

@Jennimac: I gave my DD a peanut butter cereal at 15ish months. She got hives on her face right away but it cleared in 30 min. I only bf her for 4 mo so I can't speak to that..

No, thankfully, she doesn't have a nut allergy. We were so scared and worried before we tried peanut butter. I feel so bad for all the LOs with nut allergies and their parents - can't imagine how stressful/scary it must be :( :(

@jennimac - we just gave our LO peanut butter this past weekend and she broke out in hives immediately. I breastfed and ate peanut butter almost every day and she didn't have a reaction to it until actually eating it herself.

When did y'all find out lo's had an allergy? I don't have any good allergies, but I'm sensitive to other allergens. Not sure when I should look for things. Can a baby be allergic to peanuts and react if the mom eats peanuts and breastfeeds?

we just found out our LO (13 months) has a peanut allergy last weekend. No one in either of our families has any allergies so I feel like we have a lot to learn! We are going to an allergist Monday to get her tested.

@MrsRcCar: that's probably a good idea.. The pediatrician wanted us to test my DS when he turned 1 since we already had it in the family. How has your allergy impacted you? I imagine it's hard? I don't know too many adults with the allergy, I only know kids (and quite a few).

Yes, a nut allergy (our doc said not to discriminate between peanut/tree nut) and we find out the severity later this month when we do a reaction test at the allergist office.

My DD has a peanut allergy but my DS does not. It gets more challenging as she gets older. So many things to consider. I think I'm going to have to be class mom every year to keep her safe! I never thought it would happen to my child, but it did!
