I don't think the clothes are a huge deal. Whenever i go visit my parents, my old room usually has stuff piled high :) I just move the stuff. I don't really expect my parents to clear spaces for us when we come visit; i know visits can be an inconvenience. I always try to clean up when I have people over, but sometimes it doesn't happen, especially when you're busy working. Don't take it personally!

I'm not sure what my parents will do. MIL watches our niece and nephew every friday, so she has a computer/kid's room for them.

@looch: She is the first grandchild. I guess I just want her to be more considerate and regard LO as a person that needs her own space. We've already brought up the idea of them babysitting for a few hours while we run errands in town, I'm hoping that got her thinking. But when it does happen, we'll likely bring a P'nP, which we don't mind doing. But it would be nice if she just "seemed" more interested.

My mom turned my old bedroom into a room for LO - it's where the pack n play is set up. She's also turning my brother's old bedroom into LO's "Awesome Play Room". Obviously, this is the first grandchild.

At DH's parents, there's a bedroom for the grandkids' toys that has a pack n play set up. Maybe buy an extra pack n play to leave at the grandparents' house?

My mom bought a pack n play before lo was born, and has also bought tons of toys for her. I actually feel bad because I always make us go home for naps because she naps best in her crib so the pack n play barely gets used.... my sil is having a baby soon and I hope they use it more. But we do use the toys a lot!

I think the dynamics between MILs and DILs are different than moms and daughters. My MIL is typical German (even though she is Swiss) with the standoffishness, the veiled accusations, so I totally get the cross cultural thing. (I am Italian-American).

In your case, I'd guess that she's just not sure what to do, is your daughter also the first granddaughter? What do you want to have at her place?

What if you suggested that your LO stay at their home for a few hours, around a nap time? You and your husband need to leave, so they HAVE to find a place.

@looch: Ya think? MIL is pretty verbal, maybe she's just waiting for me to say something?! But IDK if I can ever feel comfortable requesting a place for LO when it's not my house. How do you do that without sounding bossy/accusatory?

I'm Asian, and there's no way I can politely communicate that without feeling like I'm being rude. Granted she's not Asian, but ... argh this cross cultural thing is so hard!

Well, that's not bad! I wonder if they are just waiting for you to give them some direction? You're their daughter in law and maybe they don't want to offend you?

Nope, they're not retired. I should add that the only "place" MIL is planning for her is in the garden. She plans on having FIL make her a sandbox.

We haven't flown out to visit my mom yet, but she's already buying blankets, a playpen, and toys for when we visit in a few months(!). At one point in time, I thought it was a "European" thing, but it's probably not the case.

My son is the 4th grandchild on my husband's side so it's like a kindergarten at my IL's house. There's a crib, a high chair, toys galore. They're moving though, to an apartment next year and pretty much all of that will not move with them.

At my parents, we have a place where we stay, but before this, it was also a kindergarten!

LO will be mobile soon and I'm looking up play mats for when we visit the in-laws. Whenever we go there, there isn't a place for LO to rest or nap. They do have extra rooms, but the most convenient one always has FIL's yard clothes laid on top of the bed and on the chair (the only places to sit). Every time we visit, we have to ignore they're there or move the clothes on the bed onto the chair, making a bigger pile. I find this very odd because in my culture, this would mean that they don't want anyone there! But they seem genuinely happy to see LO, and have commented a few times about how they miss her. I've chalked it up to a cultural or another in-law quirk I shouldn't take personally.

But I'm a little curious how it is at grandma's house for you. Does LO have his/her own designated place?
