I feed her when she is hungry. I really don't care when she eats or even what (as long as it's healthy.) I prefer to let her listen to her body about what it needs and when. We haven't had any issues with it so far and she does a good job on her own of asking for various food groups throughout the day.

I don't let him graze, but he generally has small meals/snacks throughout the day. I SAH and he is our only LO so I can be flexible.

My LO is like clockwork for meals. She yells "snack! Snack!" And tries to climb her high chair.

We aren't particularly strict about the times, but I really do try to serve them meals + 1-2 snacks vs. all-day grazing. Mostly its so that we can eat our meals together and they can focus on eating, trying the foods we all eat together, table manners, etc. Plus, I feel like I would just constantly be prepping food, cleaning up, cleaning them up, etc if they grazed all day. But that's just what works for me/us!

@nana87: I'm the same way. DS1 had weight gain issues and hated nursing or bottles or solids or anything related to food really until he was well past 1. So we always had snacks out that he could graze on and never said no if he wanted something extra to eat.

That said we always do official meal times at 730-ish, 1130am, and 5pm. He usually wants a snack around 10am like a banana and we offer a snack after his nap around 3pm, which is usually milk and something small like crackers or fruit. He also usually gets a Yakult in the bath (we call it his evening cocktail) and he always gets a dry snack like Goldfish in the car because it keeps him happy.

She technically eats on a schedule but honestly, it seems like she is eating constantly. I am a grazer as well (actually my own eating schedule is similar to this, minus the snacks to/from daycare).

Here is a normal day for her:
- 7am - breakfast, which she picks at for the next hour as we get ready
- 8:15am - small snack en route to daycare
- 8:30am - daycare offers her their own breakfast (she often doesn't eat it)
- somewhere between 10-11am - morning snack
- somewhere between 12-1pm - lunch
- afternoon snack after nap (usually 3pm)
- 5:30pm - small snack on way home from daycare
- between 6-6:30 - dinner

I am not strict, but my husband is. He is always saying that our son needs to eat when we eat, but I notice that he does better when he eats smaller meals during the day.

(sorry for the multiple posts, I keep thinking of things to add! haha)

Also, I think part of our approach has to do with lo having issues gaining weight when she was a newborn (she went from 3rd percentile at birth to falling off the charts...and has since been around 25th percentile)--I'm still traumatized by worrying about her growth from then, so I never say no when she wants to eat, even though her growth has been completely fine now for two years.

Since LO goes to daycare he has a set schedule on the weekdays. But on the weekends not so much. Since he is older he pretty much tells me when he is hungry and we usually try to have lunch around the same time. But sometimes we are out running errands or having a day out and he just eats whatever whenever. Luckily he is a pretty good eater so I'm not worried about it!

@Bao: I guess her schedule is a little more strict when she's at daycare, in that they eat snack and lunch at set times, but even then they will give her a snack at a different time if she asks for one (and once one kid is eating, they all want a snack!), and there are days she doesn't eat her lunch but I hear she ate lots at snack time, lol!

Lo is a total grazer, and I really do not care as her weight is on track according to her dr and I make sure to offer her healthy options as snacks throughout the day. So like, she's not eating crackers all day, but she might eat yogurt, a banana, and some cereal over the course of a morning rahter than all at once for breakfast.

We've never been strict on when our LO's eat, but they ate around the same time for each meal. The past few weeks though their mealtimes have been all over the place. However, they've been eating so well! I've been giving them food as they ask (in smaller portions) vs making a larger meal 3 times a day. I would say dinner is more on track than other meals, but LO2 had Mac n cheese as a "snack" before bed last night.

How strict are you about your LO's mealtimes? Does anyone else just feed their LO's smaller meals more often?
