I have a Samantha doll from my childhood that I will pass on to DD. I wouldn't be willing to pay the price to buy one new. She is totally fine for now with her Adora baby and small army of stuffed animals (all of whom she refers to as "baby").

My 3 year old doesn't know what they are yet, and is too young to get into the books at this point. I have a Kirsten doll that I can pass down and my sister (who doesn't have kids) has an Addie and a Samantha doll. And between us, we have lots of clothes. All stored in my mom's attic. So maybe at some point I will get those dolls and get them fixed up.

My daughter is too young to want one yet, but I have Kristen and Felicity saved from when I was younger that I plan to give her. I have outfits saved as well.

@Miss Ariel: I agree that the quality isn't the same! I got my first one in 1987 - almost 30 years now! The quality definitely changed when Mattel bought them.

We bought lo a bitty twin doll last year (at the store you can buy just one) and she loooooves her. She's still young enough (2.5) that she can't really put clothes/accessories on by herself yet so we haven't had to buy many (she mostly feeds her play bottles and play food, rocks her, puts her to bed, etc)

My dd is only 2, but I just bought her a bitty baby for the holidays. But I do still have my dolls from when I was younger (Felicity, Samantha, and a modern day doll).

I do think the quality isn't as good as it used to be 20 years ago (which sounds crazy that's it's that long ago!) and a lot more is made out of plastic instead of wood now. There are also a lot more expensive sets than their used to be, like the kitchen, that my parents never would have bought me. But overall I still think it's worth the money.

My DD isn't here yet, but she will eventually be inheriting my AG dolls. It's just matter of time waiting to see her personality and how careful (or not) she is with her things.

Mine both have Bitty Baby's that were purchased 1) at Costco and 2) using AG giftcards from costco (spend $80 get $100). K (3.5 yo) loves hers. She will get a 18" AG doll next year for her 4th birthday.

No. My 2.5 and 4.5 year olds each have a target OG doll and lots of accessories, which is good enoughfor now. I think the dolls are great quality for the price, and the accessories are really well made. My girls will probably get my nieces' American Girl dolls at some point, but I won't give them those, or take them to choose new ones at the store (which I can't wait to do!) until they are more brand-conscious and a little more responsible with toys.

For me, The in-store experience is key - I probably would not buy them the dolls and less we were going to the store to shop for them has a special thing.

I really do think the quality is worth it. I just passed my AG doll down to LO and it is in great shape, versus my other dolls (which weren't even played with as much) are obviously "loved."

I should add that she did have to go to the AG hospital but I think it was $40 and they did a great job fixing her up!

@Mrsbells: I bought my DD one of the historical "BeForever" dolls last year, but I had bought $100 worth of gift cards for $80 from Costco and I waited until they had a 20% off sale, and I lived close enough to one of their stores to shop in person. So I felt a lot better about the value I was getting. She loves her doll and plays with mine from when I was a child as well. This year Costco had a Samantha set that was about $120 for Samantha, an extra dress, a coat and a book. So that's also a pretty good deal if your child isn't set on a Truly Me doll. I do think if your child takes care of her doll she can pass it down to her own kids.

DD is 4 years old and I have wanted to get her one for a while but the price always turned me off. I finally gave in an ordered one for her this week and plan to give it to her for christmas. I ordered from the 'truly me' collection and was disappointed that for $115 the doll comes with nothing other than the lilac dress shown in the picture below and a pair of basic shoes. I didnt even get free shipping, I had to pay $12.95 for shipping. After tax it was basically $140! I would have expected to get something more such as one extra dress, a book or a atleast a hair brush!

I ended up going to Target.com and ordering from more clothes and play sets from their Our Generation 18inch doll collection.
For those that have american girl dolls do you find that its worth the price and did you end up buying more dolls and merchandise from american girl?
