I plan to have my child (due in August) baptized, probably in the Lutheran church. DH's family grew up Catholic, but only his mom still goes. His brother is a bit of a train wreck, and not someone I would want morally or spiritually guiding my child. His sister and my brother are just really self absorbed. We chose our siblings for our first 2 and then my life long best friend and her husband for our 3rd.</p> <p>ETA: We view Godparents as people to guide them in faith and support them through out their life. Not so much be guardians.</p> <p>That aside, my sister will be her Godmother and one of the husband's friends will most likely be her Godfather. I like that both of them found God and church on their own rather than through parents or habit. On the guardian end, we chose my sister; not based on her being the Godmother, but because I think she knows how I would want my daughter to be raised. We aren't religious so for our family, godparents will be there for our kids when they are in need of guidance and to be the best representation of DH and I and what we would have been like as parents. They can best relay to our children what we were like and bring our "spirit" to them (if that makes sense). We want to create a will so we know he will be taken care of. We are having trouble deciding between my SIL or two of our close friends.
